Gun ownership is the act of owning a gun. To even gain ownership of a gun there is a process that one must do before gaining access to this weapon. The widespread of gun ownership among individuals used in the United States is a distinctive situation among the industrialized nations. The United States current policy of allowing its citizens to own guns has mixed local and global controversies making this issue as one of the most common debated concerns worldwide. In America recently, gun control laws have developed. Aside from the second amendment, all relates to the 20th century. Most gun controlled laws are based on state policies, they vary from state to state. The difficulty of getting a gun has arose to make sure that only responsible …show more content…
Many states have restricted this since the laws are based upon the sale and purchase of the gun. In some cases, these restrictions focus on carrying the gun and other upon the act of purchasing it. Anyways, figuring out the rules of handguns or just carrying them around are important if you have any plans to purchase a handgun. Some states today require a would-be gun owner to complete a firearms safety course to have a gun. This falls truer in the situation of wanting to carry a gun around because that causes more danger. Training courses would have to be taken into place even if they are not required. As a gun owner, he or she should have all the necessary information on liability issues, safety, and even care and maintenance of the gun. Safety courses are a major part in ownership in a gun and should always be taken into consideration. Obtaining gun ownership can be a quick and easy process, but it involves many requirements. “There is a fee at times depending on what kind of license you are trying to get, getting fingerprinted by your local law enforcement agency, as a precaution” (How to Get a Gun License). It makes more sense to know what the procedures are and always go through them before buying a gun. Gun ownership has a several step processes. To buy a gun, everyone must go through this process and gain
Like In California, all Gun sales, exchanges, private transactions and sales at firearm events, have to be passed through a California licensed firearms seller. California has no provision in the state’s constitution that guarantees an individual's right to keep and bear arms. Whereas others states lack strictness on gun laws. Like Louisiana which does not require background checks for a transfer of a firearm between unlicensed parties. They don't regulate assault weapons, they do not require gun owners to have a license or register their firearms and lastly do not allow local governments to regulate firearms. Which for some people they prefer a relaxed gun law.
Carter, Gregg Lee, ed. “Federal Gun Laws.” Gun Control in the United States: A Reference
In "The Effectiveness of Gun Control Laws:." the authors perform a surgical operation on the various views and issues as presented by the industry concerning gun regulation. The publication outlines the laws that have been enacted by congress concerning the regulation of firearms and shows their pros and cons. The authors suggest that there needs to be a more concerted effort by the executive as well as the judiciary so be able to enforce laws concerning firearm issuing and licensing.
According to the Journal of Economics there are more firearms in the United States than people. Furthermore, the majority of homicides are committed with a firearm (Levitt, 2004). This may indicate that the availability of firearms contributes to gun violence. Individuals acquire guns in a variety of ways, from inheritance, purchasing, or theft. Regardless of the means of attainment, the possession of firearms is widespread in the United States. Those who possess guns do so for many reasons such as for sport, protection, or illegal activities (Bilchik, 1999). Gun buyback programs receive weapons from all types of individuals, regardless of how they originally acquired their firearms or why.
Guns are an instrument that even the most careful of people could do harm with. Gun owners should go to firearm safety classes so they will be educated on proper handling and storage of the gun. While this should only be voluntary, something should be done to insure that guns are only sold to people who have a safe background and are of age. Congress should mandate the registration of handguns in order to keep criminals from possessing guns, to cut back on violence in the home, and to avoid accidental or intentional violence among children.
The statement that everyone should have a gun may appear radical at first but can be justified with careful explanation of the following items. Firstly, everyone should not only have a gun but should be trained in how to use a gun properly. Secondly, everyone should not only have a gun but carry a gun with them publicly. Thirdly, the guns that everyone carries should have no limitations in strength beyond those that are required for safe operation. Fourthly, public protection is not adequately provided within the current system. While there are several other topics that could be discussed, the topics chosen demonstrate the argument.
Although the Second Amendment prevents the federal government from completely banning guns in America, limited restrictions are allowed on the distribution and possession of firearms. Certain groups of people such as criminals, the mentally unstable, and soldiers dishonorably discharged from the military are prohibited from possessing or interacting with firearms (Flynn). These restrictions are enforced by background checks in some states on both a state and federal level. However, gun laws vary from state to state and are often not thorough enough; the background checks are flawed due to lack of information and misinformation, and guns can easily end up in the hands of criminals and malevolent individuals. The ease of obtaining a firearm in America fosters crime and a dangerous environment. Hence, the Second Amendment should be reinterpreted so that stricter gun laws can be implemented because modern citizens do not require guns, current background checks are flawed, gun...
Firearm owners can be criticized due to constant misunderstandings for owning guns. Many Americans may see firearm owners as someone who can hurt and kill people. As a firearm seen as an object that may cause harm to an individual, people feel terrorized when living next to an owner of of a gun. Citizens of the United States believe the cause of many violent deaths throughout the country are because of gun ownerships eligibility to all citizens and no guarantee of complete safe responsibility of the individual. People fear the lack of safety precautions and little knowledge of owning a gun will create an occurrence of accidents. People believe troops and law enforcement are the only ones to be in charge of a gun because they
Taking into account of the recent shooting sprees, the gun control debate has started again. However, people have contemplated: “Why does America need gun laws” and “Why are so many states disagreeing about the restrictions that need to be put in place for civilians looking to purchase firearms.” The reasoning for such contemplation is that the fluxuating strictness of gun laws have led to several incidences within states that have strict gun laws due to the fact that the perpetrators of these incidences have purchased their firearms either from black markets, or states where the severity of gun control is at minimal levels.
Guns have been around for a very long time. People love being able to have the freedom to do what they want, especially when they can possess something that make them feel superior. The introduction of the Second Amendment opens up the controversial, yet well anticipated opportunity for United State citizens to be able to own guns. Americans enjoy the benefit of being able to own guns for decades over people in other countries. People can buy guns and carry them around in public. They own guns for many reasons such as to hunt, to protect themselves, and simply to satisfy their desire of owning a gun, but in recent years, the issue of people carry guns has become a problem. There are so many people get killed by guns in different parts of the country. This raised the alarm to the government to decide whether the regulation of guns should be looked after. These issues, once again, spark out a big debate in America about whether the right to bear arms given by the Second Amendment was handing the states the right to maintain militia units or giving people the rights to possess and carry guns.
“I don’t believe people should be able to own guns. (Obama)” This said prior to Obama’s presidency, in the 1990’s, is still a topic that is constantly questioned today. Many American’s feel the need to seek ownership of weapons as a source of protection; While others believe that private ownership of guns will do nothing more but heighten the rate of violence due to people taking matters into his or her own hands. Philosophy professor Jeff McMahan agrees with Obama’s statement in regard to the ownership of guns. In his New York Times editorial titled “When Gun ‘Control’ Is Not Enough,” McMahan provides evidence to support his theory of the dangers that quickly follow when allowing the community to own guns legally. McMahan, throughout the text, shows responsible reasoning and allows the reader the opportunity to obtain full understanding and justifies his beliefs properly.
However, this is not the case, California has some of the strictest control laws in the United States. In California, in order to purchase a firearm, you must first fill out a Dealer’s Record of Sale (DROS) (State of California Department of Justice). Along with the DROS you must provide the person you are purchasing a firearm from a Firearm Safety Certificate, this is a “true/false and multiple choice test” that is “administered by Instructors certified by the Department of Justice”, in order to pass this test you must receive a score of at least 75% which is equivalent to “23 correct answer out of 30 questions” (State of California Department of Justice). You then must wait 10 days before your firearm is released to you (State of California Department of Justice). According to the State of California, Department of Justice, you do not need to register your firearm, unless it is an assault weapon. Although you do not need to register your firearms you must submit a Firearm Ownership Report Application (State of California Department of
Let me be clear, I do not support gun ownership or the right to walk around carrying firearms. I feel that there should be extensive laws for gun enthusiasts. There should be a set number on how many weapons; a firearm owner should have in his or her home, especially if there are children involved. Also, United States Government needs to thoroughly check every person’s background extensively, following as far back as teenage behavior. People with even the slightest hint of a mental problem shouldn’t be allowed a gun. There should also be some kind of test individuals should have to take in order to obtain a gun in any state. It should be exceptionally hard to obtain a gun in the United States.
While acknowledging that it might be an unpopular view, many readers felt that laws should allow more Americans to be armed. “We need more concerned citizens trained and carrying a gun,” wrote P.J. White of Chicago. Many of these readers identified themselves as gun owners. “Yes, I have a CWP [concealed weapons permit],” wrote Joan W. Nicholson of Sonoma, Calif. “Gun buyers must register and get gun permits through their local or state police departments,” she added. “We are required to register our cars and pass a driving test for a driver’s license. It seems a no¬brainer to require similar laws for gun
Nobody in full cognition woke up in this morning and said, “ I’m gonna go run over little Timmy with my car.” No American in their right cognition woke up and said, “ I’m gonna go shoot little Susie with my Mossberg 243 today.” If little Timmy gets hit with a car, some will argue the driver needs his/her license taken away or that man/woman needs to go to prison. The argument that will come to play with little Susie though will be that this is exactly why we need gun control. Both rights have rules and regulations, before doing either. A person must pass a written test of 25 questions over their state of residence’s road regulations, drive with a licensed 21 year old for 6 months, then pass a driving skills test which takes place with a police officer. To purchase a gun you must have a legal form of identification, perhaps a driver 's license, be 18 years of age (long rifle/shotgun) 21 years (handgun), pass a federal background check (or have a concealed carry license) before you receive the gun. We know who owns guns, we know their address, hair color, and every personal trait they have if a crime is committed with their firearm we can find them and perform
