Gun control and self-defense has been a hot topic in the United States in the last couple of years, with the United States having 88.8 guns for every 100 people. People argue whether individuals should have the right to own and carry weapons or whether there should be a stricter regulation on guns. With crimes occurring everywhere in the United States it’s only logical to allow those who qualify for a concealed weapon the right to obtain a permit to carry. With the recent laws of concealed carry weapons being allowed in all 50 states and Jerry Brown banning concealed carry on college campuses, controversy is hotter than it’s ever been. There are a couple of states, Georgia and Maryland, that do not require any special training when obtaining your Concealed Weapons Permit, this can cause people’s accuracy to be dangerous for innocent bystanders in the area. This can become fatal which is why many argue that the shooting should be left to trained professionals such as the police man. This can cause the public to feel unsafe because they don’t know whose carrying and whether they are a felon or not. According to a survey done by the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research, 75% carry a gun while committing a crime because "there 's always a chance my victim would be armed." This has caused states, such as California, to pass laws that don’t allow carrying a concealed weapon on a campus. They conclude that by banning guns on campuses it will stop shooting sprees on school property; however, a sign will not stop a criminal from killing. Rather than banning guns on a campus, California should promote concealed carry so that students can defend themselves if needed, rather than becoming helpless …show more content…

In Colorado, after the Columbine High School massacre, the state enacted a Concealed Carry act to allow law-abiding citizens to the right to carry. According to the CATO Institute this law helped to prevent a shooting spree at the New Life Mega-Church in 2007. The church security guard who was carrying a concealed weapon shot an attacker who had opened fire on the church. As reported by John R. Lott Jr., "when states passed concealed carry laws during the 19 years we studied, the number of multiple-victim public shootings declined by 84%. Deaths from these shootings plummeted on average by 90%, injuries by 82%." A Pew survey has found that 57% of people feel that owning a gun protects them from becoming a victim. The world-famous journalist John Stossel states, “Criminals don 't obey the law… Without the fear of retaliation from victims who might be packing heat, criminals in possession of these [illegal] weapons now have a much easier job… As the saying goes, if guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.” Guns, whether in the hands of criminals or responsible citizens, will always be around. Many substances have been banned throughout all of America, however, that does not stop people from obtaining that item. So responsible citizens carrying a gun for safety reasons helps to stop more deaths from occurring and helps to maintain a saver environment for all
