As the topic of guns have never really been introduced to me until I moved here to the United States, it’s been a fascinating journey learning more about guns as well as the policies that surround the topic. Hailing all the way from Tokyo, I’ve really never had the chance to talk about guns even if I wished to. Firearms are considered to be a very taboo subject within the public and I’m not even 100% sure if police officers carry a firearm on them at all times. Thinking about how every police officer in the U.S. is seen holding some type of firearm, the drastic difference is intriguing, to say the least. Although many, many civilians properly follow gun laws and restrictions, the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012 is a sign that gun control must become tighter in order for society to function properly. In this case, a 20-year-old Adam Lanza fatally shot “20 Children aged between 6 and 7 years old, as well as six adult staff”. (Sandy Hook, Wikipedia) Most likely a mentally disturbed individual, Lanza killed first graders who posed virtually no threat to him or anyone in society because of his mental state. Starting with the side of anti-guns, this group is usually categorized and seen as “liberal” and “progressive” for the idea of wanting to ban guns. Politically speaking, there are relatively more Democratic individuals who want to ban guns rather than Republican, deeming the group Democrat. Doing ample research on the Democratic party and their views about gun control, this is how they view the situation: “We recognize that the individual right to bear arms is an important part of the American tradition, and we will preserve Americans ' Second Amendment right to own and use firearms. We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation.” (On the Issues) This statement does not say that guns will be forever taken away from society but is subject to reasonable regulation. Improvements can also be made within the actual gun world also. Child safety locks can be mandatory on all guns and mag sizes could be reduced. (On the Issues) This is definitely a compromise between the two groups as they realize that entirely banning guns at this point is not a possibility. Furthermore, their biggest point within this argument of gun control is the very fact that obtaining a gun is too simple or too easy for a commoner.
