No state in America is unfamiliar to the death toll due to firearms. According to the Center of Disease Control, in 2013, there was not a single state in America that went without deaths due to guns. Anyone who is aware of current issues in America knows that gun control is a movement that is supported by half the country. The fight for gun control is one that has been around for decades, but to the dismay of many, there has been little done for their cause. There are many different laws and policies that can be put into place that would lower and greatly diminish the death toll in America that is a result from homicides, suicides, and accidental gun deaths. The Second Amendment reads directly as “a well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” This has been one of the most known and fought for amendments. The amendment was created in response to the lack of militia during the American Revolutionary War. The citizens of the Union at that time banded together on their own to fight off Great Britain. As John Oliver points out in a video titled “Gun Control and Political Suicide,” many politicians do not vote in favor for gun control policies in fear of not being reelected for another term. Half of Americans are against gun control laws making politicians less likely to vote for them, even if they themselves are in favor for the laws. Oliver pokes fun at these method of being a politician saying that it appears that politicians put their own elections and term numbers in front of the well-being of their citizens. There need to be politicians that are willing to commit “political suicide” to vote legislature that is more beneficial to the greater good of the public. Without people in office to vote for the laws that protect citizens, there will always be a constant gun violence rate throughout
