No state in America is unfamiliar to the death toll due to firearms. According to the Center of Disease Control, in 2013, there was not a single state in America that went without deaths due to guns. Anyone who is aware of current issues in America knows that gun control is a movement that is supported by half the country. The fight for gun control is one that has been around for decades, but to the dismay of many, there has been little done for their cause. There are many different laws and policies that can be put into place that would lower and greatly diminish the death toll in America that is a result from homicides, suicides, and accidental gun deaths. As John Oliver points out in a video titled “Gun Control and Political Suicide,” many politicians do not vote in favor for gun control policies in fear of not being reelected for another term. Half of Americans are against gun control laws making politicians less likely to vote for them, even if they themselves are in favor for the laws. Oliver pokes fun at these method of being a politician saying that it appears that politicians put their own elections and term numbers in front of the well-being of their citizens. There need to be politicians that are willing to commit “political suicide” to vote legislature that is more beneficial to the greater good of the public. In the United states, all it takes to hold a firearm is a background check and a safety class. Although the second amendment requires some decent documents , the qualifications to obtain a firearm needs to be revised to a mental check, a family history check , and also to make it a priority for reinforcement to check on the registered firearm every six to twelve months.
Is it any coincidence that the states with the loosest gun laws in America tend to contribute to the highest amount of national gun deaths and injuries? This is one of the main questions we should be asking when deciding what is best for our country and its citizens. Although gun control has been an ongoing issue, certain events like the Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, and the Aurora, Colorado mass shootings have increased our attention to this topic.
