When it comes to the topic of a Fat Tax for being overweight in the United States, most of us will readily agree that people should not be taxed for being overweight or obese. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the topic of how overweight and obese people will have a higher risk of health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and/or a stroke. Being taxed for being overweight is outrageous because they could be suffering from depression or have an eating disorder, but it is true that some of them could be really lazy and just eat a lot. A good way to check if you are overweight or obese would be Body Mass Index (BMI). A BMI is the value of mass and height of each person. You might think, where is this money going to? It is due to disability, premature death and higher care costs. Kinsey stated, “Obesity, which should be preventable, is now responsible for about 5% of all deaths worldwide” (1). In other words we need to try and prevent obesity to stop continuing. Not just for the global cost but for their own health.
In discussion of should there be a fat tax for overweight people, one controversy has been that they should be taxed since they are obese. Some argue that people should be taxed if they are obese and that we should tax people based on their weight like Samoa Airlines did. On the other hand, they should not be taxed on being overweight since we do not know the circumstances they are going through. My own view is that they should be helped and encouraged to live a better life style that benefits their life instead of being taxed. Our job is to encourage and help them not tax them for being
