Euthanasia is “the act or practice of killing or permitting the death of hopelessly sick or injured individuals (as persons or domestic animals) in a relatively painless way for reasons of mercy.” As of October of 2015 there are four countries in the world where euthanasia is legal, the Netherlands, Belgium, Columbia, and Luxembourg. There are different types of euthanasia raging from active euthanasia, where a person is directly involve in a patient’s death, to assisted suicide, where the patient asks for help on ending their life. The debate goes on and on between religious advocates, lawyers, and the medical community on whether this practice should be legalized or completely thrown under the title of barbaric. The Hippocratic Oath , which was written by Hippocrates, states: "with regard to healing the sick, I will devise and order for them the best diet, according to my judgment and means; and I will take care that they suffer no hurt or damage"(Zamichow and Murray) but the words hurt and damage help give rise to the question of morality in cases related to euthanasia.
Many draw from the morality perspective and add their religious belief. By religious teachings, we were all created in God’s image and given life by God as a gift and only he, as creator of all, can take it away. This disease, which is often found in deer, rabbits, and small rodents, if detected in time is curable. From what my mom has explained to me, the boy had been in a lot of pain for several weeks but never told his mom, in fear of worrying her. His parents were not aware of his illness until he was found unconscious in his bedroom and taken to the hospital. Even after he was hospitalized the doctors couldn’t find what was wrong with him, only that he was in immense pain and suffering. He was in a coma for a week by the time the final lab results came in, but by then it was already too late. The treatment in 1999 was still experimental, nevertheless, his parents decided to go ahead with the treatment in hopes of saving their son’s life. One day, my mom’s friend witnessed her son having a seizure and his vitals drop, the doctors were able to stabilize him and bring him back. She explained to my mom that up until that moment she hadn’t realized just in how much pain her son was in and that at the stage the disease had progressed to, they would need a miracle for him to survive. Both her and her husband came to the decision to withdraw the life support and let their son die, explaining that it had been selfish of them to put their son through so much more pain, if he wasn’t going to wake up.
