There are many reason why colleges should stay equal and not have separated colleges for gender. Most colleges change into this day how segregation was transformed into equality. When I started college, I thought to myself that college would be a place on where raise would only talk to their own people as shown in movies, TVs shows and the media. How students are students gender should not have to be a problem to separate students. If change where to happen professor would only teach certain groups more than others. I have heard of a school in where it’s a female school and the professor that teaches it is a male. So even if the equal balance where to happen public schools for women would not be that much public as one said they are. I realized schools where unequal by talking to Jenny Verdaze, my ant who went to a female school and was learning the material by a male, my ant would thank the women rights into this day for having schools with equality. As every child grows up, normally they are taught that everybody is equal. No matter who you are, race, gender, or color, you are just as equal as the person next to you. At least, that was how I was raised. I was raised in a Christian family where I learned that everyone is equal and slavery was a very bad event in American history. The idea of slavery was that slave owners would buy and use people to work on their plantations without needing to pay them. This meant that is was basically free labor. After reading the books the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and Uncle Tom 's Cabin, my preconceived notion of slavery was changed dramatically. My idea of slavery was that African Americans were either brought to America, or were already in America, and were forced to do work against their will. Education was sex segregated for hundreds of years. Men and women went to different schools or were physically and academically separated into “coeducational” schools. Males and females had separate classrooms, separate entrances, separate academic subjects, and separate expectations. Women were only taught the social graces and morals, and teaching women academic subjects was considered a waste of time.
We call ourselves the United States, yet we are anything but united. Social justice, which I believe to be the promotion of equality in money, opportunity, and rights amongst all people, plays a key role in todays ever-so-demanding society. Although many aspects can be affected by social justice, gender is major one. By creating equal pay between men and women and making feminine hygiene products for women become free, I believe that we as a society will inch towards creating a more just society.

One of the main issues today 's students face is the act of being given gender roles and experiencing gender bias. To further explain, "Society treats boys and girls differently and expects them to develop different gender-role identities" (87). Throughout the gender section of the book, there are several examples given on how boys and girls are divided and given gender specific roles. For instance, girls are told that “Women aren’t good at math” and boys are told “Men don’t make good nurses” (87). These stereotypes affect the thinking of the students and later become obstacles when deciding careers. One way I would promote gender equality as a teacher is by completely eliminating the use of stereotypes in my classroom. This change will be accomplished by doing group activities and assignments in the classroom which avoid gender bias. It is important for students to have an equal opportunity to achieve their goals and follow their dreams. Women have fought for equal rights since the early 1820s and 1830s. There is a strong commitment to equality between women and men in the law. Equality among men and women has gone on for several centuries and nothing has been done about it. Providing equal rights within men and women may decrease pressure on both men and women of what their stereotypical jobs should be. If equal rights would release pressure on all humans, then why are women treated as the subdominant sex? Women should have the same rights as men and to do this it is up to the entire human race to work together to fight for equality between men and women.
The first all female schools began in the early 1800’s. These academies favored more traditional gender roles, women being the home makers and the men being the bread winners. The first generation of educated women was the result of single-sex colleges in 1873. Wendy Kaminer, an investigative journalist, states that “single-sex education was not exactly a choice; it was a cultural mandate at a time when sexual segregation was considered only natural” (1). Women of this time were technically not allowed to attend school with males. Feminists of this time worked hard to integrate the school system and by the early 1900’s, single sex classrooms were a thing of the past. In 1910, twenty-seven percent of colleges were for men only, fifteen percent were for women only and the remainders were coed. Today, women outnumber men among college graduates (Kaminer 1). After all the hard work of early feminists, there are thousands of people today who advocate bringing back the single sex classroom.
Woman are always saying that they are being educated for nothing but coquetry. “Nature teaches us that they should work together, but each has its own share of the work” (158).
