Many cat owners go to a store and grab either the first, or the cheapest, cat food there. Dry food is usually the most convenient and least expensive food, so over half of cat owners choose that to feed their cats. However, dry food often has high amounts of carbohydrates, and though there is much scrutiny over what felines should be fed given their natural diet, it is commonly agreed that cats should be fed foods with a high amount of protein and a somewhat low amount of carbohydrates (Forrester and Kirk). Most dry foods, including Purina, Meow Mix, and Taste of the Wild, contain far more carbohydrates than would be consumed by a cat in the wild (Pierson). Because cats are not meant to have so many carbohydrates in their diet, the high amount …show more content…

Obesity is a very serious condition and can cause many health problems like fatty liver disease, diabetes, skin conditions, and urinary tract problems. Currently, over fifty million cats in the United States alone are estimated to be overweight or obese. The two biggest factors that cause obesity are diet and lifestyle. Free-choice feeding is when the food is left out at all times and the cat may eat whenever it wishes. Free-choice feeding alone can be very dangerous, because it encourages overeating, disturbs the cat’s natural biological cycle, and may sometimes lead to an obese or overweight feline. If it is combined with a sedentary lifestyle, it will certainly lead to obesity. Nonetheless, over half of pet owners that feed dry food allow free-choice feeding (Forrester and Kirk). With free-choice feeding, it is impossible to regulate a cat’s caloric intake and owners typically put too much food out. Many experts agree that free-choice feeding is one of the worst things owners can do for their cats’ health (Lindner and …show more content…

Because of this, canned food is an obvious solution to free-choice feeding, but it is not convenient for many cat owners. A big reason why many owners allow free-choice feeding is because they have multiple cats and leaving the food out is the more convenient than trying to feed all of their cats at specific mealtimes. However, this is especially problematic, because in addition to being unable to regulate caloric intake, there is no way to tell if one or more of the cats are not eating (Lauten). The importance of regulating how much the cats eat is increased by the high amount of carbohydrates that are in most dry foods. Dry food has more calories than canned food because dry food has less water and very little actual meat. It is possible that cats eat more when they are fed dry food because they have to struggle to get enough nutrition out of it (Lauten). In addition, cats are meant to get their energy from protein and fat, not carbohydrates. This means that they end up converting the carbohydrates in the dry food to fat instead of energy because they are not used to using such carbohydrates for energy (Hofve). When the food is being converted to only fat, the cat will gain weight. The high carbohydrate load is the biggest problem with dry food. Common canned foods like Friskies, 9 Lives, Fancy Feast, and Wellness,
