Adolescent have a deep seed need for belonging, it is this need that often brings them to experiment with everything from sex to drugs. Drinking and being a teen seem to go hand in hand. WHY? The media and entertainment industry have taken a somewhat defensive and mixed stance against drugs and alcohol use. In America, youth programs like M.A.D.D. and D.A.R.E. encourage kids to not try or participate in these behavior. However, these programs are not addressing the core problem that is central to why teens drink or use drugs and the sudden “Epidemic” of underage drinking here and abroad. However the Boys and Girls club of America Start Smart Program and the NERCRD Project have taken steps to address the need for belonging in the youth by giving them programs that are led by youth and/or people that can identify with them and give them information that allows them to exercise self-control and teach them adaptive coping skills for stress and anxiety ridden situations (Kims, 1999). The end goal of these programs are from teens to choose, not use drugs or alcohol, however, they implemented activities that would help children to understand concepts such as, what you see is not always what you get? Just because something looks and seems attractive, does not mean that it is, especially when it comes to alcohol and the entertainment industries and the image they give it. This programs breed belonging, inclusion and critical thinking which children can use and re-use in all sort of situations and so while the lessons are learned children are not force to submit to adult instigated pressure, but can incorporate the coping skills into their lives. Unfortunate programs, such as Start Smart and NERCRD, are not nationwide, NERCRD was a small pilot program in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and only ½ of the sites continued the project after the pilot due to funding or limited volunteer support. Teens of today don’t only get information from their family unit. Parents cannot control every media driven site to protect their children. As a society we have to do better to help children along. Unfortunately the best meaning parent, with the proper communication and the correct amount of education cannot ensure that underage drinking will not happen in their home. There is no special calculation that can ensure success in this arena of parenting. There are too many external variables that cannot be controlled in a child life. Which is why slogan like “It take a village” are becoming a chanting “fight songs” for parent, because you can certainly parent the best you can, and still, have a child that connects more with the TV program than you and that child will fall prey to the wonders of alcohol not realizing or putting all the piece together of the ramifications of their actions.
