Distracted Driving Kills. How safe would the world be if everyone paid attention to the road and resisted the urge to use their phones? Me and a friend were driving back from a swimming completion that got cancelled due to the rain. On our way back she took a wrong turn and got lost so she tried to use her phone to navigate her way back home. I offered to her navigate so that she can focus on the road but she refused saying that she has everything under control. She came close to killing use twice because of her slow reaction time which is normally caused by using your mobile devices on the road. When we arrived at our destination I told her that next time she might not be so lucky and that she should try to keep her device out of arms reach There are only two cities in Texas that take the law seriously (Austin and San Antonio) and as a result they were able to reduce the death count caused by distracted drivers in does cities by 10 percent. The laws in Austin is strict because the use of any mobile devices while driving or riding a bike will result in a $500 Fine (ABC). It is the same in san Antonio but the fine is only $200 but the officers enforce it without a sign of remorse. Therefore, Because of the lack of enforcement in Katy my Cousin who was caught using her phone while driving was able to talk her way out of getting fined. Furthermore, if more cities took the enforcement of this law more seriously, the death count in Texas would reduce Nearly 40 percent of accidents nationwide are caused by distracted driving (Swanson). More cities in Texas should try to educate their people and raise more awareness on the matter. Only 96 cities out of 1,216 in Texas have agreed to the banning of cell phones on the road. If they all agreed to the law that bans phones on the road, the streets of Texas would become a lot safer. My uncle who lived in Katy for almost 5 years never new that there was a law that prohibited people from using their mobile devices in school zones until he actually got fined for doing so. This experience caused him to research all the laws that exist in Katy in order to prevent this from happening again. The more people are aware of how easy it is to get distracted while driving the better. A lot more lives can be saved and the yearly increase in accidents in Texas can start to
