748 million people in the world do not have access to safe water. This is roughly one in ten of the world's population. Every year, around 60 million children are born into homes without access to sanitation. People, especially those in water-starved parts of the world, have been searching for fresh water solutions for centuries. Even in modern times, entire populations struggle with a cruel irony; they are surrounded by salt water, but lack drinking water. (Science. howstuff works) Desalination, desalinization, and desalinisation refer to any of several processes that remove some amount of salt and other minerals from saline water. Desalination/distillation is one of mankind's earliest forms of water treatment, and it is still a popular treatment …show more content…

In November 2002, California voters passed Proposition 50, the Water Security, Clean Drinking Water, Coastal and Beach Protection Act of 2002. Chapter 6(a) of Proposition 50 allocated the sum of $50 million for grants for brackish water and ocean water desalination projects. (Desalination) Mobile water desalination units provide emergency water supply wherever and whenever needed. The units can be easily moved and deployed to drought stricken and water stressed areas. Desalination is one process that will help create an additional source of public water supply and help keep the groundwater aquifers from being drained dry. Desalination can create additional sources for public water supply and help areas where the groundwater aquifers are having trouble supplying all the water that is needed. As of June 30, 2011, there were 15,988 desalination plants worldwide and the total global capacity of all plants online was 66.5 million cubic meters per day, or approximately 17.6 billion US gallons per day. Some places like India are recording a big profit from these desalination plants. India’s water desalination business is set to triple to $1.2 billion by 2017 as rising demand from industry spurs the South Asian country to build more purification plants, according to a research report. The number of units that process sea water in India will reach 500 in five years from 180 now, with more than 300 plants being built in the states of Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Maharashtra. Saudi Arabia leads the global desalination market worth $14.3 billion. The market for desalination in India, which has a coastline of 7,517 kilometers (4,671 miles), may be worth $630 million by 2014. Power plants and pharmaceutical companies use 72 percent of the current capacity, with the remainder taken up by Municipal Corporation. One desalination plant destined for public use is the $922 million, 50
