The criminal market that has developed through the illicit commercialization of marihuana, has now become a justification for decriminalization of this substance. It is well known that we, as mexicans, are in the middle of the so called “war against drugs”. There is violence and insecurity in our country; there is an underground market dealing illegal substances; and there is a high economical cost associated with drug-related incarceration. But I write to you, Mr. President, as a non-governmental actor, as a college student, that is concern with the consequences of the decriminalization of marijuana not on our economy, but on the well being of our citizens. I write on behalf of a group of mexican college students that are against the legalization of drugs like marijuana. Through history, utopian models have worked as structures that explain how society should function. They are ideas that help explain the world and look for a better understanding of what reality could be like. As popular as they were during renaissance humanism, let me tell you about my utopian proposal for a drug-free country today. As idealistic as it may sound, I believe that it is worth the try. What we need, I believe, is a pact for drug free-thinking citizens. We need to have our people thinking rationally, taking responsibility for their actions, and not having their judgment clouded by some substance. The problem with drug trafficking in our country goes further than the commerce of marijuana. It is way more than a process of buying and selling illegal substances. The product it offers has exceeded its way through the market. The decriminalization of marijuana is not the solution to violence and citizen security. Drug trafficking is now based on the established business; it is a whole organization of money laundering, violence and conflict. Legalization of this substances won’t turn drug dealers into businessman, and drug users into buyers. Once drugs are state regulated, this established business probably will look for another product to traffic but it won’t be satisfied by being part of the state regulated economy. What we need is the participation of citizens on rejecting illegal substances. We need drug free thinking citizens. We need rational citizens.
