“The civil libertarian must appreciate the fact that some sacrifice of individual rights and liberties has to be made in order to achieve and maintain a safe, stable society in which the individual may exercise those rights and liberties.” (Inbau). In today’s society, the average American tends to rely on their own person, rather than the government or public safety personnel. America reads their rights in the constitution and comes up with made up rights, or takes them to the extreme when, in fact, the personnel in charge are simply trying to keep them, and everyone involved in the situation safe. Community safety should take precedence over an individual’s rights in the United States under dangerous circumstances because rights are being …show more content…
The most well know terrorist attack is the attack on the twin towers in New York City, New York on September 11, 2001. Since the first initial attack, America has fallen victim to twenty seven attacks on the nation’s soil, this number has gotten out of hand. In addition to massive terrorist attacks, mass murders are also considered a dangerous issue. A mass murder is defined as the killing of four or more people, and while there were many murders since the beginning of time, the first major mass murder is recorded on September 6, 1959, when Howard Unruh went on a killing spree and murdered thirteen people in his neighborhood over small arguments such as the property line. Another recent issue in America’s society are riots. While riots in the civil rights era started out as peaceful sit-ins, riots since then and throughout history have evolved. From the peaceful sit-ins, they began to get more violent, such as burning churches, and now they have tried burning whole cities. America’s rights should stay in tact and they should always be able to keep them. American’s freedom of speech is compromised on a daily basis in schools and in the public eye. It should not matter if a student has her nose pierced or is wearing a tank top. Or if there is a big riot. It is the American people 's right to be in the middle of everything and try to …show more content…
In the case of Abrams v. U.S., he was arrested for “protesting”. In our freedom of speech, we have the right to protest, until it gets potentially dangerous. Abrams was arrested because he threatened the life of the current president in his protests. He was a Russian immigrant who was in New York City trying to bring anarchy and attempted to have a “general strike against the government’s policy of intervention” (Polenberg 4) and condemned President Woodrow for sending troops into Russia. They testified that it was Abram’s right to protest, but the defense was thrown out on account of the Sedition Act (which covers broader ranges of offenses that previously allowed) of May 16, 1981 stating that the way he threatened others was wrong. (Polenberg 25) Overall this
Every year in the United States, an average more than 100,000 people are shot. In just the last three years, a total of 325,609 people have been killed from gun violence; if one were to think about it, that’s more fatalities than the population of Pittsburgh (307,484.) There have been shootings in schools/universities, shopping centers, and even a gym that have gone to show that no one is safe, no matter their surroundings. Gun violence just doesn’t effect one, it affects many. There are so many questions as to why things like this are happening, but many just want all of the violence to refrain. There are many issues with gun violence that has taken a huge toll on families and communities throughout the United States. Just in this year alone,
It is a sad time in American history when one can easily recount recent school shootings in their own area. This ease stems from a sharp increase in the number of firearms brought into elementary and middle schools across the country, with an intense focus on the issue beginning after the shooting of 20 children from Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut. Most school shooters are male, white, and often upper middle class. They are also more, often than not, under some type of mental stress that is causing them to create this type of violence in our communities. In fact, many school shooters are never suspected of doing any harm to their peers and teachers until it is much too late.
Trigger warnings? Some may say necessary while others think of it as people being weak. Imagine sitting in a class and the topic at hand is the war. The professor without giving any warning decides to show a video of the gruesome war. Little did they know in their class sits a student who has just returned from the war and wanted to push their life forward. By not giving this warning, the student freaked out and caused a whole disruption. They managed to calm him down and tired to continue the lesson. Now would you be comfortable to continue the lesson after a huge disruption, or do you think that even a little warning in the beginning of class could have prevented this? Trigger warnings help even in the smallest ways. Trigger warnings are
Violence in the United States is a major problem, but our politicians only want to focus on gun violence, and some of them believe the solution to ending gun violence is by preventing law abiding citizens from exercising their second amendment rights. Guns are easier to commit a crime with than other weapons, or without a weapon at all, but with an estimated 270 million guns the hands of citizens (11 facts), if they were the problem we would know it by now. It is undeniable that guns are responsible for a high amount of crime, but we already have tens of thousands of gun laws in the United States (How many gun laws are there?), that haven’t been able to curb gun violence. If the current laws were working, then maybe there would be a reasonable
Our nation seems as if it is in a constant battle between freedom and safety. Freedom and security are two integral parts that keep our nation running smoothly, yet they are often seen conflicting with one another. “Tragedies such as Pearl Harbor, 9/11 and the Boston Marathon bombings may invoke feelings of patriotism and a call for unity, but the nation also becomes divided, and vulnerable populations become targets,” (Wootton 1). “After each attack a different group or population would become targets. “The attack on Pearl Harbor notoriously lead to Japanese Americans being imprisoned in internment camps, the attacks on 9/11 sparked hate crimes against those who appeared to be Muslim or Middle Eastern,” (Wootton 1). Often times people wind up taking sides, whether it be for personal freedoms or for national security, and as a nation trying to recover from these disasters we should be leaning on each other for support. Due to these past events the government has launched a series of antiterrorist measures – from ethnic profiling to going through your personal e-mail (Begley 1). Although there are times when personal freedoms are sacrificed for the safety of others, under certain circumstances the government could be doing more harm than good.
James Eagan Holmes didn’t let six-year-old Veronica Moser-Sullivan out of that movie theatre that fateful night. Daniel Parmentors mom didn’t get a chance to say goodbye to him because of T.J. Lane. Mary Sherlack’s husband will not set the table for her after Adam Lanza entered her school. The actions of those three shooters were not to cause such small but widespread repercussions for so many other mourning people. They all suffered from various mental illnesses. 79% of recent shootings are attributable to mental illnesses. The U.S. should re-evaluate gun screenings to decrease the odds of another mass shooting by not allowing anyone with any mental or psychological problem to own or possess a firearm. While the Constitution states that everyone has the right to bear arms, the present situation is different from that past, when relations with Great Britain were shaky. Secondly, gun violence is on the rise, with 46 school shootings since 2010, compared with only 40 from 2000 to 2010. Finally, if gun screenings are modified, there will be many jobs available, while contributing to national security at the same time.
Additionally, more laws and policies such as the Brady Law need to be either updated or increased especially given their effectiveness. Politicians need to stop being influenced by big money and actually take these matters seriously. Politics are suppose to help people not harm them and you are suppose to be a politician so you better society not yourself. If we had less selious politicians than more would get done and greater stronger laws would be enacted and the brady law would not stand on its own. According to a study by the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence the percentage of recovered crime guns that were traced to dealers in for in the four Brady states was greater for guns purchased before the Act took effect when compared to guns
A seemingly normal school day in Newtown, Connecticut, who knew that it would turn into one of the most devastating days of they would ever experience. About 2 years ago, students at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut were involved in the most devastating event of the year. According to an article by the Huffington Post, a mentally troubled man in his twenties named Adam Lanza shot 20 children and six staff members, with his mother’s weapons. His mother had apparently grown up with guns and thought it would be good to have in their house. Prior to driving to the school, he even shot his mother, but his motive is unknown. He drove to the school leaving a 12-gauge shotgun in the car, walking towards the school, he shot through the front entrance. “Lanza moved toward two classrooms of kindergartners and first-graders,” police said. Within five minutes he managed to kill 20 students ages 6 and 7 and six adults. He had fired more than 150 shots from a .223-caliber Bushmaster rifle. When police started to arrive he shot himself in the head, taking his own life. This incident was the deadliest mass shooting at a grade school in the US; in total 26 lives were lost.
Sandy Hook, Columbine, and Virginia Tech are some of the school shootings that have recently occurred in the United States. This recent surge of school shootings has led Obama’s administration to promote highly regulated gun laws. The newly proposed gun laws have led to an immense discussion regarding what the federal government’s role in gun control should be. In specific, people of the United States have been arguing about the amount of control the federal government can declare over the distribution of weaponry. People that are pro-federal gun control believe that if the federal government declares more control of the distribution of firearms, the amount of unnecessary deaths will decline. On the contrary, people that are pro-gun rights believe that if the federal government declares more control of the distribution of firearms, the individual’s right to express the second amendment will be overlooked, and
Shots have been fired worldwide, and most at officers, but there have been some cases where the people have saved the officers, so the question is: should gun control be tightened? The start of the gun control has begun and people are getting scared because of people who carry the guns and use them for protection. In many places there were officers that needed help and no other officers were able to help at that time and there was some random citizens with handguns that they used to protect them and they did that job just as good as an officer who has train for 6 years with that one gun to where they were hitting bull’s-eyes. There are people that can’t own guns because of the fact that the school shootings and all the shootings are from the people who are crazy or have illnesses and can’t help it. Therefore they shouldn’t carry but anyone can buy a gun and not have a background here in Indiana and it is mostly pistols (handguns) that they don’t check for and it turns out that most of the shootings are from the people with pistols (handguns) that is another reason that the pistol grip shotguns are illegal just for the fact that it is powerful and the fact that someone can hide it in their jackets and shoot where-whenever they wanted to. Most
In our society, American citizens live in fear because fear is constant in this day and age. Adding the ability for individuals to be able to freely carry firearms in public is only worsening the fear inside of us. By allowing people to openly carry loaded weapons, it raises the risk of a shooting in broad daylight, or even a mass shooting as we hear about time and time again. The United States should prohibit the ‘open carry’ policy entirely and make it illegal to go out in public armed because there is simply no need to carry a deadly weapon at all times because the possibility a shooting taking place significantly increases when one individual is carrying a firearm.
Are we Americans even aware of how many school shootings have occurred in the U.S. alone? That number is 346. 346 school shootings have happened in the U.S. so my question is why are we not doing anything about it and why haven't we done anything about it. Teachers should be given guns with the adequate training because we could protect the students, have a safer environment for the students but the teacher could be opposed to teachers carrying guns.
Have you ever been involved in a school shooting ? Imagine you are huddled in a corner with all your classmates around you screaming and crying. Minutes later you hear gunshots down the hall and the screams get more violent. Soon swat member come get you out. You see blood and injured people lying around. No kid nor a parent wants to go through that. There have been numerous school shootings in the past couple years. With metal detectors school shootings would go down tremendously.
Public safety covers a wide variety of people and organizations, but carries one common theme and that is, the public’s safety. This course has broadened my knowledge on the many roles that make the public safety sector go around and the role the public plays in it as well. My thoughts before the course were close minded and to the point. I quickly realized that policing is not as cut and dry as I once portrayed it to be. Society is always changing and adapting, and it is the job of the those in public safety to adapt and change with it. The mindset that I grew up with, in rural Saskatchewan, was the police are good people and you will only need to deal with them if you break the law or see someone break the law. My answers in the module 1 survey reflected my upbringing. My first thought for
Gun safety is a subject that has been a main topic in the past few years among many, especially within politics. It is something that has become a substantial topic in the past few years due to many shootings and accidents that have occurred with today’s youth. It is a topic that needs to be addressed.
