My interest for The Chinese pangolin started when I watched The Wild Kratts on PBS kids. I would always ask my mother if we could go to the zoo to see them. When we would go to the Zoo I would never see them, so I would ask a zookeeper why there were no Chinese at the zoo? I was surprised to find that there were eight species of Chinese pangolin and that they were extremely endangered. One of the threats to Chinese pangolin is being poached for their scales which are used in medicine. Another threat to the Chinese pangolins is that they are hunted for their meat and eaten as a high-end cuisine. Because the killing threats of Chinese pangolins increasing every year, and the good intentions of the African Wildlife Foundation and the ICUN SSC Chinese pangolin …show more content…
They also have interesting facts about their tongues. “A Chinese pangolins tongue is attached near its pelvis and last pair of ribs, and when fully extended is longer than the animal’s head and body” (Claridge 801). The Chinese pangolins stomach is muscular and has a spine made of keratin to project its interior, it mashes and grinds prey (Dickman 86). “[Chinese] pangolin limbs are stout and well adapted for digging” (Dickman 86). Each paw has five toes, and their forefeet have three long and curved claws used to demolish the nests of termites and ants (Dickman 86). They also use their claws to dig nesting’s and sleeping burrows (Dickman 86). “They can run surprisingly fast, and will often rise on their hind limbs to sniff the air” (Dickman 86). Chinese Pangolins can also swim. Chinese pangolin can also have very intense mating seasons (Heath 3). “In late summer or early autumn, male Chinese pangolins may be observed fighting over the opportunity to mate with a female, resulting in the victor and female mating over a period of three to five days” (Heath 3). These solitary mammals are nocturnal and highly secretive, so it is difficult for scientists to
The Pygmy Three-Toed-Sloth, also known as Bradypus pygmaeus scientifically, has been classified as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List. “They are restricted to one area from Isla Escudo de Veraguas in the archipelago of Bocas del Toro, Panama” (“Pygmy three-toed sloth (Bradypus pygmaeus)” (a)). The island is very small measuring to about 5 square kilometers in area. These sloths are usually found in red mangroves at sea level. As of now the Pygmy three-toed-sloth are critically endangered and weak law enforcement, deforestation, and poachers are to blame.
The background of this article gives information that is necessary to understand the experiment. The shape of the pelvic girdle is an appropriate predictor of both phylogeny and movement in terrestrial vertebrates. However, in marine vertebrates, the gravitational forces typically applied to terrestrial pelvic girdles are not there and therefore have little impact on the shape of the girdle. Pelvic girdles of fish are generally not attached to the vertebrae and primarily are used as a place for muscles to attach and supporting of the fins. The authors discuss how in many cases the pelvic girdle could be removed and not result in any complications. However, there are some marine vertebrates that are capable of bottom walking on the ocean floor with their fins. In batoids, the pelvic fins are used for walking, which is when pelvic fins move in an alternating fashion, or punting, when both pelvic fins move at the same time. There is also augmented punting; this is when the vertebrate uses both the pectoral fins and the pelvic fins to generate more thrust, this action decreases the forces on the pelvic fins during a punt. While this locomotion would
Sarai Michel English 9HP, Period 4 When I was six years old, my parents took me to SeaWorld for the first time. I remember clearly watching the Shamu show and sitting in the splash zone, ending up soaked in water by the end. But I also distinctly remember wondering how an animal so big and beautiful could ever be happy in such a small tank, so far away from home. The animals could never possibly experience the joy they would have out in the wild where they belonged.
Earth, an endless source of wonder and beauty, produced the Great Barrier Reef. Hustling and bustling, the Reef thrives like a busy city, teeming with life. Sheltering thousands, corals, maintain the well-being of the Reef; however, the world threatens its nature and delicacy. Populations growing and technological advances increasing, the world becomes more and more disconnected with the natural world, posing an alarming risk for the planet we live on. Although many organizations try to keep the oceans clean, because of human interference and unnatural occurrences, the Great Barrier Reef needs scientific help to adapt corals to new conditions for means of survival, putting pressure on the Australian government to save their ocean environment.
Keeping animals locked in cages, bored and cramped up in such a small space is an awful sight to show the children. It creates an image in the little minds of children that animals are to be treated like they don’t matter. They say Zoos are a place where children can learn about the wild, exotic animals, but in reality it doesn't teach them anything only that they are meant to be caged up, which is wrong. Also, it is really painful to see the animals bored and lonely, so why should people keep letting them do this to these beautiful creatures. Animal captivity for entertainment should end to let them go to their rightful home.
In the last 30 years since the lionfish first appeared in the Atlantic Ocean, they have become a destructive nuisance. The lionfish species which are native to the Pacific Rim and Indian Oceans are now invading the Atlantic and Caribbean Oceans, eating any fish that can fit into it's mouth. Scientists don’t believe the invasion will ever be completely eradicated, however if the problem is recognized there are steps that can be taken to try and contain this invasion at a manageable level. Through education, fishing or hunting of the species and by teaching other species to eat the lionfish, there is hope humans can gain control over these invasive creatures.
Visiting a country for vacation tend to have a strong correlation with buying unique merchandise that the country has to offer, such as bags, clothes, shoes, etc. However, we tend to be unaware of the origin for those items. The clothes and bags that we bought might have come from animals that are endangered, or it could have been coming from animals that are now extinct; and unknowingly, we take parts in the big business of wildlife trading.
Orca whales do not like to be taken from their family, held captive for many decades and put with other whales that they do not know. No other living organism on this planet would like to be put through the same thing. Orca whales are highly social animals, they are very intelligent, and are very emotional. If they are kept away from other whales, fed intermittently and received little attention from staff makes them get very emotional and can lead to death of people and the whales. Orca whales should not be held captive; they are beautiful creatures that are not great for people’s amusement and if they are treated poorly, they will act poorly.
Imagine wanting not a puppy, but a tiger for your birthday, imagine the expenses of owning that tiger and the dangers and hazards of owning that tiger. Do you really think it’s a good idea to get that tiger? No, it’s not a question. It’s a lot of work, and it’s also very dangerous. Exotic animals are not good to buy and have.
Figure 4-The giant panda’s primary diet consists of a variety of different species of Bamboo because bamboo is so very low in nutrition, pandas spent up to 12 hours per day searching for and consuming bamboo. The arrows are pointing towards the Snow Leopard and Man as they are the top apex predator of thi...
Modern-day genetic technology has granted mankind with the opportunity to bring back extinct species from the dead. If humans have come to possess the DNA from an extinct animal population, it is possible to create an identical clone of the animal in question, effectively “bringing it back from the dead”. Many ethical dilemmas surround the practice of de-extinction, and rightfully so. Recreating an extinct species could produce groundbreaking scientific breakthroughs, generating exciting opportunities for future genetics-based research. However, there could also be monumental consequences: the newly revived, once-extinct species might destroy the ecological equilibrium of modern Earth
Visitors to China may spot a creature resembling a bear. This animal is the panda, a Chinese member of the Ursidae family. The Chinese panda is an endangered species, threatened by continued habitat loss and habitat fragmentation. The Chinese Panda has a body shape like that of bears. It has black fur on its legs, arms, shoulders, ears, eye patches, and muzzle. The rest of this animal's coat is white. Usually, a panda has a round head, stocky body, and a small tail. The shoulder height is 63-71 cm. Adults measure around 5 to 6 ft long, including a tail of about 10-15 cm, which is the second longest in the Ursidae family. Adults weigh approximately 250 pounds. Panda cubs are extremely tiny, weighing only around 5 ounces at birth.
Taken from the only place you've ever known. Away from the only family you have. Kept in crates and cages to be sold. Removed from their home, exotic animals are put in yours for personal amusement. This act is ruinous an inhumane, it violates the basic rights of human and animals. Exotic animals have a rightful place in their natural habitats, not as pets, because they endanger the community, become sick, and their owners abandon them.
Imagine a world where there are no animals anywhere. There are still the ordinary cows, pigs, cats, dogs, but there is not a single tiger or rhinoceros. People all around the world have been killing animals for thousands of years and they need to stop and obey the laws. Make your voice heard for the animals; they can’t speak for themselves so we need to do it for them. Other reasons on why animals are getting put on the endangered species list and or going extinct: habitat intrusion, pet trade, climate change, and disease. Please help to save the animals or they won’t be here any longer.
You may ask what is a Pangolin? Well a Pangolin has been an endangered species that lives in Africa. I think that the Pangolin is just an amazing animal. My animal is a endangered species that are trying to be relocated into captivity and saved. The Pangolin is an amazing animal that doesn’t need to become extinct so that’s why I did a research paper on it.
