Due to our fast paced day-to-day living, lack of physical activity, and poor food choices, childhood obesity in the United States is growing at an alarming rate. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past thirty years, (Ogden, Carroll, Kit, Flegal, 2014). In 2012, more than one third of our children and adolescents was reported as being overweight or obese, (2015). The consequences of this growing epidemic are becoming more and more detrimental to our children’s health. Childhood obesity not only causes short-term health problems such as, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and pre-diabetes but, there are long-term issues as well. Society must become aware of the causes of childhood obesity and how to prevent it. We need to start by making better lifestyle decisions and our children will follow suit. We can help them by limiting the amount of unhealthy snacks and sugary drinks that we consume ourselves. Also, we need to remember that is it more difficult for children to gain access to the foods that are bad for them if we do not provide it. Start by keeping more fruits and vegetables on hand and encourage them to snack on these and to drink more water. Our school systems need to provide better meals and snacks for them as well. Their choices are limited during school lunches and there are not enough fresh fruits and vegetables offered to them. Chocolate milk is offered for free, but they have to purchase bottled water. Sugar sweetened beverages are the largest sources of added sugar and an important contributor of calories in the diets of children in the United States, (Reedy, Krebs-Smith, 2010). Therefore, replacing these drinks with water is a great start to helping your child learn better
