Over the last couple decades there has been a growing epidemic amongst our country’s cherished youth, obesity. Wikipedia’s dictionary states that, “Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have a negative effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems”. There are many causes for a young person to be obese and some of them are none preventable medical conditions, such as unusual thyroid activity or the side effect of a medication, though the vast majorities of cases are from a poor diet. It should not be a crime to be overweight in America, no matter what the age, race, or gender. Adults should be allowed to make their own health decisions, but…show more content…
The onset of obesity does not happen overnight, it takes many bad decisions for a normal, healthy child to receive the title of obese. Many parents make mistakes, but a child does not gain 50 or 100 pounds of body fat because of a few bad meal choices. It takes hundreds of bad decisions to gain enough weight to become obese, more than enough time for a responsible guardian to make the necessary changes to a diet. The fact they are either unable to recognize this big problem, or do not care enough to fix it, is a testament to the mistreatment a child must go through on a daily basis before they are able to become obese. This mistreatment may not make them cry out in pain, or run away from home, though only after a child has become obese do they feel the physical and mental effects, and often it is too late to reverse…show more content…
Some families have six or seven people in them, eating even two meals a day adds up very quickly to a large grocery bill. Some would say that poverty is to blame for obesity, not the parents. But these children aren’t starving or going hungry at all, they have the exact opposite problem with too much consumption resulting in dangerously high BMI (Body Mass Index). Some families claim to eat unhealthy food simply because it is quicker and cheaper to buy a hamburger with fries, than it is to buy and make a home cooked meal. Making a healthy meal is not always quick or cheap, but the amount of time they save in the drive through is quickly erased with the damage being done to their bodies. Obesity can shorten a person’s life by decades unless treated by medical professionals. If good food is not in the family budget, there are also several state and federally funded programs that reach out to these families, trying to help them and their children receive healthy meals. The government can put money on a debit card for you to buy food. Food vouchers for specific types of food can be sent to you. A person can even go to a rescue that has prepared meals at extremely low cost or no cost at all. These are all available to adults who cannot afford proper food for their family.
