Childcare on Campus Single moms are the most affected and providing childcare on campus is very beneficial to them. More than 4 million women attend two-year public institutions or community colleges, and more than 1 million of them are mothers. Many student mothers struggle to stay enrolled all the way through graduation. Most of them are more likely to drop out of school, and the reason is because most often there is no affordable or available childcare and the students have limited financial resources. Child care availability is an extremely important part of predicting student parent 's ability to complete school with a degree. If more colleges would provide child-care, then the low income parents would not have to work full time while attending college. The federal government has a program called The CCAMPIS Program. This program supports the low-income parents who are enrolled in a college education through the help of campus-based child care. Federal money is used to establish and maintain on-campus child care for the need of low income student parents. College administrators can apply for this grant and any institution of higher education is eligible to receive a grant under this program. Federal Pell grant funds awarded to students enrolled at the institution of higher education for the preceding fiscal year needs to be equal to or exceed $350,000. Some parents in the world do not discipline their children and do not care what the children. All they care about are them selves. At that point the social workers take the child and put them in foster homes with complete and total strangers. Some companies just put kids with people who do not care about the children just what they get paid. They just let the children go off and do what they want and do not supervise the children’s activities. The social workers should do more thoroughly background checks. There should also be more supervision in foster homes instead of little supervision, and the workers should visit the home and the children more often than they actually do.
In order to maintain a normal lifestyle, single mothers have to shoulder a lot of responsibilities- running errands and spending time with their kids, besides having to work for long durations at office. In today’s society the majority of households have a family dynamic where both parents need to work. It is nearly impossible for most families in America to survive financially without two incomes. This puts many parents in a situation where they have to find extra help to watch their children while they are away at work. “These days couples face complex negotiations over work, family, child care, and housekeeping. It becomes evident that where traditional marriage through the centuries has been a partnership based on mutual dependency, modern marriage demands greater self-sufficiency” (Hekker). Day care becomes a necessity for many families, and the main concern for most parents is if the day care will be a positive experience for their children. Day care can be a positive option for parents seeking help with child care as well as developmentally for the child.
Children are our future and they should be given every possible opportunity to succeed in life even if they are born into disadvantaged situations. Sometimes the families of certain children can’t provide as much as other children’s families and this can create a gap in the achievement and development of these children. Those disadvantaged children need special programing that accommodates for the lack of cognitive and social development that if not properly addressed could lead to poor school performance and delinquency.
Foster Children who are emancipated out of foster care are in danger of becoming homeless because Foster Homes are allowing many unfit parents to adopt, they are emancipated before they can find a job that can support them, and they are not being taught the skills to avoid homelessness.
Linda Lee wrote an article called “The case against college.” The name of this article is extremely misleading. Linda is not trying to push people away from college, she is simply questioning the benefits of sending her son. In the article Linda talks about students attending college straight out of high school, and if the cost of education is worth it in the long run, as well as many other points.
