While many people face certain issues with campus dining, one of the few issues that really bother me is the dining hall hours. Ball State has the times listed on their website which most of the time they do not stay true to. Here I will list the times for you; breakfast is 6:45-10:29, lunch is 10:30-4:29, and dinner is 4:30-midnight. While I have gone in during those times to eat they dining halls are usually all packed up and starting to get ready for the next mealtime. I especially feel that they do not stay true to the dinnertime. All too often I will go into a dining hall around 8:30 and they main cuisines will already be packing up. This leaves people who are either working on homework or at work themselves hungry when they get the chance to finally eat. 82.35% of the people who took my survey said that they spent their time studying or working on homework. I asked if anyone has ever skipped dinner because they did not like the food options after everything has closed. 70.59% said yes to having skipped dinner. While this may be a problem I feel that one of three solutions could be the answer to fix it all. I believe that the dining hall could either leave one specific dining hall with all options open until twelve, have all of the dining halls open until twelve as said by Ball State, or better yet, change the dining times. …show more content…
While the halls do stay open until the time said most of the food is already packed up, leaving the students with only one food option available. 35.29% of the students have had to eat off of campus due to the dining areas being closed. The average American diet is filled with lots of greasy fast food, large cuts of meat, salty junk food and sugar-laden sodas. This tradition is then passed on to the children and creates a legacy of ailments, disease and a lower quality of life. To many people, plant-based eating sounds like a death sentence. In reality, it 's all about getting creative with the foods you already like. It also involves intentional meal-planning and organization. However, your health is worth it. The ability to experience a better quality of life should be motivation enough to start changing your eating habits. Consider a few of these simple ways to incorporate plant-based eating into each meal without eliminating delicious taste.

Food is simple, yet humans have made it very complex. In the United States of America, food has become more of a hobby than a nutritional need. Every family gathering, holiday, and birthday celebration contains food of some sort. Types of food are customary at different times, like birthday cake at a birthday party, or stuffing at Thanksgiving. Dining facilities, especially the main on-campus food facility, Gibbons Dining Hall, need to remain open later to accommodate everyone. By giving students more time to eat, more students would opt for the more costly meal plans and not have to load up on snacks and other items from off campus stores such as Wal-mart. The less students go off campus, the more likely their revenue is to stay in the university. The addition of dining hours would certainly benefit everyone involved in the university.
At State University, the school has a set of certain hours that one is able to go to the cafeteria. However, those hours only comply with the workers and the students no matter what. To many of the students, and others as well, those hours are not compliable to their schedule. Students are left with hunger, having no choice than to be late to class to go buy a snack or go off campus to buy fast food, when not necessary. Not all the students have the same class schedule which should be able to allow different cafeteria hours to comply to everyone's needs, not only certain people.
A plethora of benches would need to be bought in order to make sure that every students feels comfortable on campus during lunch. Then, you have to factor in the cost and time of hiring people to implement them in an appropriate place. The lunches at this school will also need to be drastically improved. The cafeteria needs to expand so that the lines move faster and more food needs to be available to accommodate the growing population. The lunch itself also needs to be more appetizing and nutritious. All of these changes will cost the school an immense amount of money. Thousands of college students eat more than one meal in the dining hall each day. In most colleges, such as UC Berkeley and UC Riverside, the dining halls are buffet style. Students are able to choose their own food and get as many plates they want. Dorm food is often unhealthy because the cafeteria serves various fried and processed foods. They also offer a dessert bar with unlimited cookies and ice cream. These desserts are often high in sugar and calories. Eating one cookie and a bowl (or a cone) of ice cream can contain over twenty-five grams of fat and sugar (Calorie King). Although many people think that eating one cookie or a little ice cream won’t hurt, it can become harmful in the long run. With students taking in all the sugar, the wrong kind of energy is being stored. It will only give students a sudden burst of energy—a sugar rush—and then make them “crash” or be even more tired than before. All these unhealthy options and easy availability of greasy and sugary foods for students can affect how well students do in school.
Students should be given a longer time to eat their lunch. Students should be given longer lunch hours because they end up eating less with less time. In the article, “ Kids Who Are Time Crunched at School Toss More and Eat Less”, it states, “ Kids who had less than twenty minutes to eat we’re consuming, across the board, less of everything.” It is not healthy to not eat lunch and if students end up eating less of it they will never be full. It is evident that the freshman fifteen is a social problem and health problem. Freshmen hear about it in tons of magazine, blogs, and articles. Parents and friends are all constantly presenting the issue by saying watch out for the freshman fifteen. This problem is caused by the increased amount of alcohol, fats, carbohydrates, fast food and cafeteria style food. It can lead students to be overweight, obese, and have many health problems. Students have the freedom to eat when, how, whenever they want, and there is no one to tell them what to eat or when freshman should stop. Going to college is a significant change from being in high school. Many times, being in a new environment and balancing classes can lead to the quickest and easiest eating options; these may not always be the best.
Having to eat school lunch is not the best. Eating school lunch is like eating in prison. People may think that eating off school campus is a bad idea but it's not. Although some students will come back late for school, they will have enough energy to get through the day. If they are to come back late then only the students that come back on time should be allowed to leave the second time.
We should have off campus lunch because none of the other students want to waste any school money on their ID. The subject chose I will be discussing is off campus lunch. The issue chose is relevant because other students will have to eat the same thing everyday. The purpose or reason why I chose to discuss this topic is because the students don't want to have the same food everyday. I am credible speaker because of how this affects me. This issue affects me because I don’t want to have the same food every day, and there is a mall next to our school and we could get our favorite food there and we could just walk there. No other students does not want to eat school lunch because they want fast food soda or juice and they can walk with their friends and they can hang out with their friends.
When one goes away to college, their life changes dramatically. They are forced to make changes in their own lives in order to adapt to college life. When one is in high school and living at home, their eating habits and personal hygiene practices are for the most part controlled by their parents. They are told what to eat and when to eat it. They are told to keep their room clean and to take their vitamins, etc. When one moves away to college, they are on their own. There is no one telling them to clean their room, or to do laundry or what they have to eat. In some colleges and universities, it is required that freshmen live on campus and eat at least two meals a day in the dining hall. This isn't necessarily for the university to monitor a student's eating habits but rather to get the student acquainted with the campus and other people living there. Food served in college dining halls has not been known for it's nutritional value. However, over the past couple of years college chefs have been working to change that. While a lot of students have committed to eating the healthier foods and trying to stay healthy, the vast majority lives on pizza and taco bell or any other cheap fast food chain that is open until the late hours of the night. College is a fast paced environment and fast food caters to college students. In this fast paced environment, students more often than not neglect their health and personal hygiene and the consequences range from obesity to deadly eating disorders.
Eating Responsibly To eat responsibly means to know what you are eating and knowing what you are putting into your body, whether it is healthy for you or not. It’s a sad fact that the typical American diet (high in meat and processed foods) is not healthy. There are a lot of different ways to stay healthy, but it can also be very difficult to follow a good diet plan all the time. I know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and I have tried to eat well before all of my classes. I include the necessary protein of eggs and sausage, and include a fruit of some kind.
