Persuasive Essay On Banning Cigarettes

658 Words2 Pages

Cigarettes are one of the most common killers known to mankind. Cigarettes kill about 6 million people every year, and that number isn’t going to go down in less we do something about it. Smoking in the twentieth century killed only 100 million people, whereas a billion could die in our century. There are several more reasons why we should ban cigarettes, and I am going list them.
The first reason is because cigarettes are a defective product, which means it is unreasonably dangerous, killing at least half of its long-term users. They are made to be addictive. The Food and Drug Administration(FDA) could require that the nicotine in cigarettes be reduced to make cigarettes less addictive. If they did that then when people try to quit it wouldn’t be so hard.
Philip Morris set up an entire factory to make its next brand cigarettes, using critical fluid extraction techniques to get a 97% reduction in nicotine content, which is what could be required for a 0.1% nicotine cigarette, down from present values of about 2%. So it’s not like the cigarette companies couldn’t make a cigarette if the FDA wanted to lower the current standard. So why wont the FDA do it? With all my research I have yet to find a answer to that question.
Cigarettes are also defective because they have been made to produce an inhalable smoke. Tobacco smoke was almost never inhaled before the nineteenth century; it was to harsh. “ Smoke first became inhalable with the invention of flue curing, a technique by which the tobacco leaf is heated during fermentation, preserving the sugars naturally present in the unprocessed leaf. Sugars when they burn produce acids, which lower the pH of the resulting smoke, making it less harsh, more inhalable.” There is a little irony h...

All in all cigarettes only have negative health effects on your health. According to the CDC men who smoke die 13.2 years earlier than men who do not smoke and women die 14.5 years earlier than women who do not smoke. These are the reasons I believe that cigarettes should be illegal.
