Warning: Arts Education Is Declining Approximately 20 years ago global studies comparing student test scores in the core subjects showed that American students were not performing as well as students in many other countries and that this performance appeared to be worsening. As a result, the federal government became more involved and forced schools to adopt a new set of standards that emphasized the core subjects. Unfortunately, this initiative often led schools to limit or discontinue arts education. Programs and laws such as the No Child Left Behind initiative (NCLB), Common Core, and the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) have, while trying to improve our students performance, caused another problem. Lack of, or limited funding typically leads school administrators to either cut or limit arts education and other “enrichment” programs. The decline in arts programs means that the students in poorly funded areas miss out on all of the benefits that studying the arts provides, such as higher performance level, more inspiration and creativity, more attention to detail, learning from mistakes, becoming a self-directed learner, better social tolerance, improves verbal skills, organization, and prepares students for their futures. “Workplace demands are for students to understand how to solve problems, what makes arguments plausible, how to build teams and coalitions, and how to incorporate the concept of fairness into the everyday decisions.” (The Importance). The decline of arts education in American schools is doing a disservice to the nation’s students because they will miss out on all of the opportunities arts education provides. I have learned studying arts has many advantages and better prepares students for their futures. I would recommend for the class of 2017 to take at least one semester of some kind of art, whether it be dance, theater, visual arts, or music, to discover for themselves the benefits of arts. I think the most beneficial and practical solution is to separate the arts education budget from the other subjects education budget. This solution would provide the most stable source of
