Persuasive Essay On Animal Testing

As humans, we are always trying to progress, whether it is up the social ladder, developing new technological and medical advancements, or creating a new product for a brand label. In order for this idea to be released to the population it must first be determined safe for public consumption. In order to do so, labs use animal testing to further understand how it reacts biologically. By using animal testing, scientists can focus on the products chemistry, effects of people, and its toxicology. In the 1950’s Sir Peter Medawar, a British immunologist, suggested to C.W. Hume, the founder of UFAW, Universities Federation for Animal Welfare, that bio technology has advanced to point that they could reduce the use of laboratory animals. Hume…show more content…
Medawar predicted that the use of animals in laboratory experiments was a phase in medical history and would peak within the next 10 years and then proceed to decline. Medawar and Hume’s predication was spot on. The practice of animal testing came under fire around the 1970’s for being an unethical and inhumane act. Due to this movement, in the 1990’s, the European Union moved towards a policy change that would forbid products that were tested on animals, and or had ingredients that were tested on animals, to be sold. This policy was implemented in 2013. Utilitarians believe that suffering is acceptable only if the outcome of the testing is greater than the suffering itself. Even though scientists obligation is to help the people, they also are obligated to not harm animals. The burden is on the scientists to find alternatives to the unethical act of…show more content…
The council reconvened in 2014 and held another meeting on how they plan to achieve such a high goal. Their new approach to toxicity testing “would generate more relevant data to evaluate risks people face, expand the number of chemicals that could be scrutinized, and reduce the time, money, and animals involved in testing” (Rowan, 452). Since then, the world’s best scientists have begun to develop new methods of testing that could replace the use of animals in laboratories. Dr. Elias Zerhouni, the U.S. National Institutes of Health director, told attendees at a government meeting that ‘“We have moved away from studying human disease in humans. … We all drank the Kool-Aid on that one, me included. … The problem is that [animal testing] hasn’t worked, and it’s time we stopped dancing around the problem. … We need to refocus and adapt new methodologies for use in humans to understand disease biology in humans”’ (“Alternatives to Animal Testing”). Since scientists are the ones who test on the helpless animals and have the knowledge to find new humane testing techniques, it is also their moral duty to help this cause. Thankfully, many scientists have gotten on board with finding alternatives since there are already a large number of scientists who foreshadow a day when animals will no longer be needed for
