For many years, animal testing has been the main solution to test household products, food, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. The term “animal testing” refers to the procedure performed on certain animals to determine if a certain product is safe. Most of these procedures done on the animal can cause a great amount of physical pain, and distress. Most animals die shortly after the experiment because so much pain was inflicted on their body. After the testing is done, the animals are left to suffer in cages. The different types of experiments performed on the animals are outrageous. There is even an alternative to animal testing, but scientist refuse to use it, and some people wonder if animals are even needed for medical research. Animals …show more content…

The anatomic, metabolic, and cellular differences between animals and humans make poor models for human beings. The animals being used are technically not close in genetic makeup. For example, products that do not have a reaction on animals could potentially have a reaction on us. The National Research Council in the United States has expressed its vision of a “not-so-distant future in which virtually all routine toxicity testing would be conducted in human cells or cell lines,” and science leaders around the world have echoed this view (needs citation). There are a few ways we can take animal suffrage out of the equation like the sequencing of the human genome and birth of functional genomic, the explosive growth of computer power and computational biology, and high-speed robot automation of cell-based screening systems. These alternatives are just a few ways we can end animal …show more content…

Animal tests are more expensive than alternative methods and are a waste of government research dollars. The government can be using money in different places, but choose to use it on killing innocent animals. The Humane Society International compared a collection of different animal tests, and the cost difference of the alternative. Some examples are, an “unscheduled DNA synthesis” animal test cost $32,000, while the in vitro alternative costs $11,000. A “rat photo toxicity test” costs $11,500, whereas the non-animal equivalent costs $1,300. As said before, animal testing is only for the interest of humans, and we are spending unnecessary amounts of money when there are alternatives
