Have you ever been in a situation or known someone in a situation where an abortion could be necessary, but there was no place to go to get one? Abortion is a very controversial topic in this world, even though it has been performed for many, many years. The procedure has been legal in the U.S. since people can remember. The history of abortion, as well as the different procedures available, is why the topic has split society into two groups: pro-life and pro-choice. The act of getting an abortion is when “the pregnancy is removed from the womb, either by taking pills which involves taking medicines to cause a miscarriage or by surgery where the pregnancy is removed from the womb.” (Abortion Services, Advice and Treatment) There are many reasons a woman would want this for herself and her baby. A woman can take all of the safety precautions in ensuring a pregnancy doesn’t occur, but sometimes contraception fails. Some people just can’t support a child whether it be financially, physically, or mentally. Sometimes, the child is just not wanted. Women sometimes want to prevent a child from being born with birth defects or other medical problems. Victims of rape or incest don’t want to carry the resulting child. Lastly, physical or mental conditions could be dangerous to the woman if the pregnancy is not aborted. (Abortion-Reasons Women Choose Abortion) Even though there were reasons behind getting an abortion there was a lot of controversy over the topic of abortion which is why states began to criminalize abortion. Before the mid-to-late 1800s, abortion was legal, but then states, one-by-one, started passing laws that made abortion illegal. One of the main reasons for anti-abortion laws was the “fears that the population would be do... ... middle of paper ... ...n which could to take several hours to several days. Finally, like the other procedures, the uterus is scraped to make sure all contents are removed completely. Like all other medical procedures, risks and complications are a given. All of these abortion procedures share some common risks. Those risks include a hole in the uterus or other damage to the uterus, a cut or torn cervix, incomplete removal of contents of uterus, infection, complications from anesthesia, inability to get pregnant, a possible hysterectomy, hemorrhage, emergency treatment, and death. (ABORTION RISKS AND PROCEDURES) However, most of these risks are pretty rare. There are many arguments as to whether abortion should be legal or illegal. People are divided into two parties: pro-choice and pro-life. The pro-choice group is for abortion being legal, and the pro-life group is the exact opposite.
