As the holiday season begins and we complain about how cold it is in the line outside of Best Buy waiting to buy things we don’t necessarily need, we tend to forget what is happening outside of our domain. Picture this: instead of shivering outside of Best Buy, you are shivering in a tightly packed inflatable boat. You are with your mother, but your family didn’t have enough money for everyone to be transported, so your father and brother had to stay home to work. Ahead you see an island, you’re shaking has steadied - the safety you’ve been waiting months to get to is finally a beacon of light a few miles out. For a Syrian refugee, the scenario is a reality, and some would consider that much “lucky”. As we talk about taking in these escapees into our own country, it’s easy to say things such as “there’s plenty of places for them to go”, “why should I care?” or something as simple-minded as “they’re all terrorists, we need to protect ourselves” when Americans such as you or myself have probably never had anything remotely close to what these innocent human beings - children and elderly included - are experiencing every day. We continue to blacklist, punish and betray these faultless people for the sins of the very people they are trying to escape from. These are the people that are looking to us, “The Land of the Free” for help, and we are turning our backs due to our own egoism. We may consider ourselves just one nation that will do no harm to these people by not acting, but we are so much larger than that. An immigrant is someone who is seeking a new place of permanent residence, where as a refugees are people who are seeking safety or “refuge” in a time of political upheaval or war. The Syrian’s do not want to leave, but they know that they for their own families safety. They do not want to be in our country any more than many Americans want them to be. We tend to forget they these people are exactly like us. One of the largest problems today is that we always forget the phrase “put yourself in their shoes”. Let’s consider before the 2016 election that the Obama administration suddenly began killing peaceful protesters and commanding the U.S. military to guard streets and attack or kill anyone that did not vote for him. Maybe then other countries would start funding and supplying “rebellion groups” to try and disarray the Obama administration, but after doing so, these rebellion groups began to take power over the American people, turning on them and brutally murdering innocent civilians daily. Would you want to leave your three-story, beautifully remodeled house to live in overpopulated and rundown island where no one around you speaks English or even wants you there? Probably not, but you know that you must go because that is where you and your family will be
