No one, no matter how weak or strong, rich or poor, tall or small, is safe from the reach of cancer. Cancer is a dangerous disease killing millions every year without any for sure or easy way to treat it. For years people have tried to raise awareness towards cancer but now that it threatens the lives of so many do people listen and try to help. However even with the help of dozens of different groups and agencies cancer rates continue to grow at an alarming rate. Although we have found ways to treat it we only have theories on how to prevent and stop it. What make cancer so deadly are its Symptoms, commonness, dangerous treatments, the many different areas it can affect, and the cost encored.

Cancer can affect anywhere from the brain, lungs, and liver, to the breasts and heart. One of the most common types of cancer is “Carcinoma” “Cancer that begins in the skin or in tissues that line or cover internal organs -- "skin, lung, colon, pancreatic, ovarian cancers," (Medicine net)”. This shows that dozens of different types of cancer only fall into a small category and can all only be treated by certain means. Some types of cancers are even incurable making them particularly dangerous because once you get one of those types of cancers there is nothing that you can do except wait for the inevitable death that awaits you. Meanwhile other forms of cancers are minor, meaning that there is therapy and cures for them, however just because they are minor compared to the more deadly types of cancer, all forms of cancer are extremely potent and dangerous. Sarcoma is another form of cancer “that begins in bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, blood vessels, or other connective or supportive tissue -- bone, soft tissue cancers, (Medicine Net)”. This form of cancer affects the body by taking out the supportive tissues and functions, causing extreme pain and discomfort for whom ever is unlucky enough to get it. One of the most common types of cancer is leukemia which “Cancer that starts in blood-forming tissue such as the bone marrow and …show more content…
The cost of doctors and cancer treatments come at no cheap price, medical bills can began to build up into the thousands of dollars before you can even blink. In fact “Bankruptcies resulting from unpaid medical bills will affect nearly 2 million people this year—making health care the No. 1 cause of such filings, and outpacing bankruptcies due to credit-card bills or unpaid mortgages, according to new data. And even having health insurance doesn 't buffer consumers against financial hardship.(Dan Magen)”. This shows that even after people have won the battle against cancer there will still be lots of pain that will affect them and their families. Not only have these same people not been able to work for long periods of time but many are permanently scared either mentally or physically. No one who is diagnosed with cancer comes out of the fight unharmed, many become handy cap both physically and mentally, requiring to relearn how to complete even the most trivial tasks. However many cancer patients have to pay the ultimate price, death. If cancer isn’t caught or treated soon enough the patient will die, causing emotional scaring on all of their family and friends. Sometimes young children will wonder why their mom or dad died, causing a huge impact on the lives of thousands of children. Some parents may even have to
Isn’t it overwhelming to consider the fact that approximately one in eight deaths in the world are due to cancer? To make this more comprehensible, the number of deaths caused by cancer is greater than caused by AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined. Along with the idea that this disease does not have a definite cure is a mind-staggering concept to grasp. If not caught in time, cancer means guaranteed death. These types of thoughts were floating around my head when my mother had told me that my father had mouth cancer.
The world we live in can be wonderful at times, but can also be dangerous and danger isn’t a good place to start at.The word cancer seems terrifying when someone thinks about it and they should be because there is a lot of types of cancer from all over the word.Cancer is the leading causes of death everywhere you go and it happens from different parts of the body. From someone that doesn’t understand cancer it’s very important to know about the aspects in which they come around. They way a cancer forms, symptons that are caused, and the way each cancer type is treated is very important to consider.
Austin Simonton Mrs. English English 10 – hour 2 May 6th, 2014 Brain cancer Introduction It is predicted that 564,800 Americans will die of cancer this year. Roughly 418,500 Americans died in World War 2 that is more than 100,000 less than what cancer will do this year alone.
In 2016, an estimated 1,685,210 new cases of cancer were diagnosed in the United States and of those 1,685,210 cases cancer brutally killed 595,690 of the people. Cancer has a major impact on society in the United States and across the world. Cancer leaves families torn, broken-hearted, and forever scared. Cancer is the worst disease known to man, and the worst part is, there is no known cure. With the discovery of a cure for cancer hundreds of thousands of people would get to live their life instead of losing the battle to cancer. I have had many personal experiences with cancer in my family, I recently lost my granny and great-granny to cancer. In addition, it not only hurts the person diagnosed but it hurts everyone who knows the person being diagnosed. With a cure for cancer my neighborhood of the future would be almost perfect. Cancer ruins many lives as it has mine, there is no way to change my life now, but we can help save others lives and futures by finding a cure for cancer in the near
Lung cancer is arguably the most devastating of all cancers, leading to more annual deaths than breast, prostate, and colon cancers combined (Crosta). 228,000 new cases are found every year (Marks) and there are approximately 1,370,000 deaths per year. Cancer in general accounts for 7.6 million deaths all around the globe. Cancer alone stands for thirteen percent of global deaths (Crosta). The percentage for the survival rate of lung cancer is a devastating sixteen percent (Marks)! More females are diagnosed with this cancer over men, but does not mean men cannot get this cancer as well. Actually, my uncle was diagnosed with lung cancer this past Summer. Shockingly, a couple of months later, my cousin, who I call my grandmother was diagnosed
“Just take my hand, together we can do it, I’m gonna love you through it.” (I’m Gonna Love You Through It- Martina McBride). Breast cancer is an awful disease that will change your life in a single moment. ”Everything in my life was turned upside-down. I really had a wonderful life; A husband, three children. And breast cancer came along and just smashed my world” (Janelle’s Journey). Breast cancer is an aggressive war that takes a great amount of fighting to survive. “You go from being perfectly healthy, to feeling like, ‘okay, I’m dying’. It started a whirlwind of things that I never anticipated having to go through.” (Bonnie’s Story- Beyond The Shock). Did you know that the youngest person ever to have been diagnosed with breast cancer
For years people have tried to figure out one big question. What is the real cause of cancer? After much research, the statistics say that cancer is a disease of the modern world (Stevenson 1). A few main factors that cause cancer are the use of tobacco, industrial agents, and a person’s weight and diet. (Landau 2-4). The modern environment and everyday lifestyle of people contain factors that cause cancer.
Avoid the sun during the middle of the day. For many people in North America, the sun 's rays are strongest between about 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Schedule outdoor activities for other times of the day, even in winter or when the sky is cloudy.
Breast cancer is one type of cancer that has been in my family. One of my family members that had it, is dear and close to my heart. She fought for the longest time to keep getting better through all the chemo and the radiation that she went through to get rid of the cancer. She fought and fought, but she received treatments and was getting better for a while. When she was going through the treatments, if I or anyone in my family were sick and wanted to go see her, we had to wear a mask, so that we would not get her sick. We had to wear the masks because her immune system was not where it was before and could not fight off an illness as fast as it was once able to. She was getting back to her normal self and doing more for a while. Then she just became
Cancer is undoubtedly a huge issue today, since about 41% of Americans will be diagnosed with cancer (United Press International). However, not many are talking about the significance of mental health for the victims. Each year 12.7 million people are diagnosed and 7.6 million will perish annually from the disease (UPI). Each year, millions of people perish from the disease, and about 25% of them with severe mental illness (National Cancer Institute). The treatment for this disease causes fogginess-depression, anger and many other emotions whose symptoms are often overlooked. Though cancer is not always terminal, it can dramatically affect the mental state of the victim and their loved ones. More should be done to emotionally support cancer
So one is going about your business, doing your normal routine and it’s time for a doctor’s visit. You go in there, the doctor performs his regular examine and sends you home. The next phone call you get from your doctor is a tragic one. They have just diagnosed you with a disease that has a low survival rate. And so begins the medical treatments. These treatments could last weeks, months, or years, during which you will face some of the most difficult choices. Some of our family members or friends have heard these words before and unfortunately doctors can only do so much to help, and the cost of treatments are on the rise. According to the NY Times, you could be paying up to a million dollars in one year just to pay for treatments, drugs,
Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body that has no mercy on anything that it feeds upon. Cancer kills thousands of people each year. This disastrous growth of abnormal cells can link to many things when found. The many professionals that specialize in treatment for cancer seek out ways to improve there treatment. Some people live because of a treatment performed on them-some people die with a treatment given. The many cancer treatments may vary in how there performed, for instance there’s a doctor that uses baking soda as his main tool to treat the overgrowth of cells.
With an inaccurate diagnosis, comes the emotional and physical toll of treatments, as well as the cost. When diagnosed with cancer or even awaiting the results of a cancer test, one can develop anxiety (Brawley). Doctor Welch, a professor at the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, teaches his students how “screening leads to a lot of anxiety.” Along with the emotional toll that follows the diagnosis of cancer comes the physical aspect. Treating tumors that would have not become life-threatening has some pretty big risks: pain, infections, anesthesia reactions, or complications (McCullough). Along with those risks, one may lose a part of their body or a function. Because of all the treatments on nonfatal cancers, women may lose a breast while men can lose their sexual function (Aschwanden). But above all that, treatments and “diagnostic interventions can even cause an early death” (Brawley). One of the biggest worries people have when diagnosed with cancer, is how will the treatments be paid for. With the cost of cancer treatment in the United States set to grow thirty-nine percent from 2010-2020, billions of dollars could be spent on something that might not have even required treatment (Aschwanden). For any family or individual person, paying for cancer treatment can cause a financial fallout. The “treatment of an overdiagnosed tumor cannot provide benefit, but it can lead to harm” (McCullough).
Chronic diseases are conditions of long durations and generally slow progression such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and asthma. They are the leading causes of death, disabilities and rising health care costs in the United States and as well as in other countries of the world. However, the good news is that chronic diseases are all preventable. The World Health Organization has estimated that if major risk factors for chronic diseases were eliminated, at least, 80% of all heart disease, stroke and type-2 diabetes would be prevented and more than 40% of people with cancer would be avoided. Under the leadership of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, New York City made improving citizen health a top priority. In my opinion, I totally agree with Mayor Mike Bloomberg that common ground can be found between health promotion and chronic disease prevention.
In a perfect world, cancer would not exist, but the best that society can do is donate toward cancer research. Unfortunately, as a whole, our society is unaware of where donations are needed and where their donations are going. The diseases with the most victims receive less donations than diseases that do not kill nearly as many. One of the biggest aspects of the misallocation of donations is the simple fact that donations are being sent to the wrong places. Childhood cancer, of all the cancers, seems to receive the least amount of donations. Many people donate toward diseases with good intentions, but childhood cancer is not receiving an adequate amount compared to other foundations or associations.
