Personality and the Workplace
I prefer to discuss a situation at a previous employment as opposed to anything that may be a current situation. I will, therefore, set the stage, so to speak. The company is a small business that deals with commercial real estate management. The company is well on the way to becoming well known industry wide and soon after I began working with this company, they merged with several others, thereby forming an almost nationwide corporation.
When I was hired at this company, it was because of who I knew and not because I interviewed for the position. I was living in another state and, when hired, I only had two weeks to pack myself and move to Atlanta. Although I was not at all familiar with the commercial real estate arena, I did study hard to learn what everything was and how it all related. Just as an interjection here, let me also note that this was while I was very sick; before I had been diagnosed and begun treatment for my Rheumatoid Arthritis. As difficult as it was, I still managed to get to work on time every day and get my job done with minimal errors.

According to Fossum (2002), there were five primary leading personalities in labor relations. Terence Poderly and Uriah Stephens were the main leaders and personalities of the KOL. They focused mainly on long term goals and were partial to arbitration over strikes. These idealistic views caused them and the KOL to be not as popular and therefore lacked members and growth. The first personality test was the basic personality test. The assessment from the basic personality type indicated that my personality classification is an ESTJ (Llorens, 2010). The results found that I am more extroverted than introverted; I tend to be more sensing than intuitive, more of a thinker versus a feeling individual, and I am judging versus perceiving. The interpretation indicated that I am realistic, logical, analytical, decisive, organized, and I like to run things. The results were interesting, the analysis and interpretation was extremely accurate to my tendencies and my current role in my organization. The result provided me with insight to my tendencies and approaches to situations that I face each day as a leader in a multi-faceted organization (Llorens, 2010). Additionally the results indicated that my personality type matches my career aspirations as an Executive Program Manager in a corporate setting. Understanding and accepting my tendencies as an ESTJ personality type helps me be more introspective and insightful of my approaches and how I treat people and convey expectations will make me a more aware of weaknesses and strengths and use the knowledge to improve how I engage with others.
Although I was nervous because I had never done anything like this before, I had only been accustomed to cutting grass or construction jobs with my dad that only involved nailing wood and sheets of plywood. I worked for Frank for about a year and a half before I had to quit. I missed California too much, including the warm air, the smell of the dairies, and the ocean breeze. I moved back and lived with my dad. I have had a few jobs in my life that didn't last very long, either because the timing wasn't right or for other reasons.
Everybody's personality is different. Some may be extraversion's or narcissists, low self-monitoring or high self-monitoring and the list goes on. During this semester, taking Personality Theories has thought me more about myself than I have learned in my whole life. I believe that my personality stems from my family environment, my friends and society and then I get to choose what I think to be morally correct and what fits with my personality the best.
Kaviani & Hatami (2016), analyzed primary research information for a correlation between personality traits and mindfulness. In this report, mindfulness is defined as paying attention to every action, and showing the ability to change (Kaviani and Hatami 2016). Personality traits reviewed in this study are: empathy, Theory of mind, openness, pro-social behavior, and suggestibility. A questionnaire focusing on all five of the listed personality traits and mindfulness, were given to a group of 275 participants. It was found that those with a high mindful rating, correlated with the listed traits to a higher degree than those in with low mindful ratings (see Appendix A for chart). There were two classifications of mindfulness (low and high mindfulness).
Many psychologists throughout many years present theoretical approaches in an attempt to understand personality. Hans Eysenck’s approach of personality differed from that of Sigmund Freud and his psychoanalytical theory of personality. Eysenck’s theory of personality relies on the scientific basis of biology in explaining human personality. Although Freud’s theories are intriguing to an open mind, Eysenck’s approach made measurable scientific sense. He relied on the use of trait and factor analysis, which is a statistical method. Freud relied on faith and his personal opinions based on observational research to reach the assumptions that set forth his theories (Feist & Feist, 2009). Eysenck and Freud did not agree on anything about understanding how and why the mind operates the way, it does.
Personality is massive part of an individual’s identity. Our personalities dictate our patterns of thinking, feeling, and acting. An individual’s personality exposes them to predispositions and habits that influence their actions and lives. Early on, personality assessments consisted of physical features ranging from head shape and facial characteristics to body type. In today’s world, personality assessments are mainly based around traits. Traits are simply descriptions of one’s habitual patterns of behavior, thought and emotion. Derek, I too have worked in the financial industry for some time. My field took me into the brokerage field helping individuals understand the market or to help plan for their retirement. In this field, not only were we required to learn all the CPA and brokerage laws, but we were also required to learn all the banking laws that went in place with it. I absolutely agree that in this environment everything that leads to job dissatisfaction is obvious and ever growing. Even in my most recent position right now, we are heavily regulated and forced to do things that sometimes we aren’t even as comfortable doing all in the name of making money, but it culminates into this peaked pile of “low pay, increased worked loads, lack of promotions, and excessive stress on the job.” (Robbins, 2013)
