The definition of personality is the combination of characteristics and qualities that form an individual’s distinctive character. Who knew that in the 21st century, where it has now been made possible to travel on Uwheels, people of all ages would be facing the struggle of not knowing who they really are. As simple as the question “how would you describe your personality?” is, it is has become more difficult to answer this because the use of social media is altering our personalities. We are constantly being exposed to new ways of thinking, new ways to express ourselves and new ways to act every time we log on to our accounts. Videos and posts are being uploaded right at this moment, subliminally making others behind the screen feel like they have to portray themselves in a certain way. At first I thought I was the only one who took the precautionary measures of identifying who my audience is before posting something but after reading “Putting Your Best Cyberface Forward” by Stephanie Rosenbloom, social scientists have been studying this practice for more than 20 years. “Catcher in the Rye”, by J.D. Salinger, is a timeless classic of a boy just trying to find himself in world full of rejecting people. The main characters name is Holden Caulfield. Holden is a sixteen year old boy who has been expelled from a yet another school. Holden has many problems in his life ranging from girlfriends to family. He does not have many friends, the girl he used to love had sex with a boy he hates, and his little brother passed away at a very young age. No matter what Holden tries to do, it seems life only gets worse. Holden has a strange personality. He wants to hold onto every childhood aspect that he can yet have sex with a prostitute. Every character in “Catcher in the Rye” has very different personalities and characteristics; each of these characters represents and shapes Holden’s own personality. When I look at my friend Sarah, a bubbly, yet anxious college student, I can see two aspects of her personality clearly: on the bright side, she is cheerful and ready to please, on the gloomy side, she is also a nervous wreck and is easily stressed. Some aspects are Psychoanalytic, Ego, Biological, Behaviorist, Cognitive, Trait, and Humanistic. Different types of behaviors are amazing to learn about, mainly the behavior therapy, collective behavior, crime and punishment, and Social behavior and peer acceptance in children. I chose Behaviorism over the other aspects because I believe behavior determines human personality and is very interesting. You can tell what one is by his behavior, and one behaves according to what place he has in society. By doing this paper on Behavior, I hope to get a better understanding of, if behavior develops a personality or if personality guides behavior. I also see behaviorism helping me in the future with my personal and professional career by understanding human personality and behavior better than I do. Impression management is a social phenomenon that occurs in our daily life both consciously and unconsciously. “It is the act of presenting a favorable public image of oneself so that others will form positive judgments.” (Newman 184) Our first impressions of a person are always based on physical appearance and we compare them to the norms of our society. We can all admit to the initial meeting of a person and first noticing their age, gender, race, or other ascribed characteristics. Our cultural norms are ideas such that fat is “ugly” which are very different across societies and time. Also, impression management is an idea of how individuals interact in different social situations. “Sociologists refer to dramaturgy as the study of social interactions as theater, in which people (“actors”) project images (“play roles”) in front of others (“the audience”).” (Newman 169) This is our human need for acceptance and way of managing the impressions we give others and perform what we think people want to see. Our social life is governed by this concept but it only works with effective front-stage and back-stage separation. Our front-stage is the visible part of ourselves that we allow others to see unlike our hidden back-stage self.

Personality is a branch of scientific discipline that studies temperament and its variation among people. It is a dynamic and a set of characteristics possessed by their atmosphere, cognitions, emotions, motivations and behaviours in various things. Personality conjointly refers to the pattern of thoughts, feelings, social adjustments and behaviour consistently exhibited over time that powerfully influences one’s exceptions, self-perceptions, values and attitudes. When studying human personality, psychologists may consider different levels of analysis. Personality can be viewed as characteristics typical of human nature and that we are “like all others” (Kluckhohn & Murray, 1953), as humans share the same basic biological components, experiences of development and social interactions. Alternatively, personality can be analysed in terms of individual and group differences, where we are “like some other[s]” (Kluckhohn & Murray, 1953). This approach considers that groups of individuals possess common characteristics, but that characteristics vary between individuals. For example, men are generally more aggressive than women, but one man may be more aggressive in comparison to another man. This level of analysis takes a nomothetic view on personality. Some theorists however may be more interested in individual uniqueness and take an idiographic approach to studying personality.
These things have become so common that not having them almost makes it seem like there is something missing. Because of features such as these, it is incredibly easy to share every aspect of what we are reading, doing, eating and listening to with everyone in our social networks. While this has meant incredible advances in the way we interact with our world, it has also fundamentally changed the way our social relationships are created and sustained. Social medial led users to have false impression of others and changed our feelings. It involves understanding individuals’ traits such as withdrawal and willpower and how various parts of an individual link together to form personality. Personality expresses itself from within an individual and is comparatively regular throughout in an individual’s life.
