Introduction Phenomenon of Interest Social network is a combination of all the most popular growing sites. It is filled with people from all over the world with different cultural backgrounds and different personalities. Social media is the easiest way for people of all personalities to connect with other individuals, whether they are personally familiar with them or not. However, some individuals spend more time on socializing on social networks than they do in real life. Some of these individuals only go on these networks to post pictures and specific details about their own life. Others rarely go on at all, but continue to have pages set up for themselves that they rarely update just to stay in the know of what's going on in other peoples lives. All these individuals have different personality traits. This study sparks interest in seeing the difference between introverts and extroverts on social media websites and how they interact with others. Importance of the topic Studying the relationship between different personalities on social media is important for people to understand what type of personality they are. Some individuals may not realize whether they are introverts or extroverts, and whether or not they have drawn out a profile to make themselves seem like someone they are not. Boyd (2007) suggested that when creating a social network profile, one “can be seen as a digital body where individuals must write themselves into being.” (P. 131) Purpose of the Current Topic The purpose of the current topic is to determine which personality traits are more likely to be more active on social media websites. The current topic is to determine whether individuals who are more introverted in public areas tend to be extrover... ... middle of paper ... ...iables include social media usage. the frequency of that usage of the type of social media outlet. Setting the types of social media types to 8 categories: social networking (Facebook), professional social networking (LinkedIn), social news (Digg), media sharing (YouTube), microblogging (twitter), blogging, online discussion forums, bookmarking sites (StumbleUpon), and chat applications (What’sApp/SnapChat) Measurement for these variables will start with using the Likert-type scale at the interval level. Questions in the survey focus on use of social media in terms of relationships with fellow persons and interaction with information gathering outside of those relationships. The questionnaire will also question the frequency use of each category in correlation to those relationships. Finally the questionnaire will use five-factor test to identify personality traits.
Individuals conceived between the years of 1980 and 2000, as indicated by this article, experience serious difficulties finding their actual self due to the online networking outlets; they regularly depict another person life of a fantasy dream American life on the web. As today’s more youthful era makes the transition to adulthood, trying to accommodate between online and offline characters can be hard. “Van den Bergh asked 4,056 individuals, ages 15 to 25, when they felt they were or weren't being genuine online or logged off, with companions, folks, accomplices or employers.” Through this research he found,
Psychology covers a huge field and one interesting aspect of it is personality. Personality by itself involves various issues. Some aspects are Psychoanalytic, Ego, Biological, Behaviorist, Cognitive, Trait, and Humanistic. Different types of behaviors are amazing to learn about, mainly the behavior therapy, collective behavior, crime and punishment, and Social behavior and peer acceptance in children. I chose Behaviorism over the other aspects because I believe behavior determines human personality and is very interesting. You can tell what one is by his behavior, and one behaves according to what place he has in society. By doing this paper on Behavior, I hope to get a better understanding of, if behavior develops a personality or if personality guides behavior. I also see behaviorism helping me in the future with my personal and professional career by understanding human personality and behavior better than I do. No matter what your major is, if you can determine one's personality by his behavior you can really get your work done from that person and understand the better than you would otherwise. This person could be your employee or your employer. Behavior Therapy Behavior therapy is the application of experimentally derived principles of learning to the treatment of psychological disorders. The concept derives primarily from work of Russian psychologist Ivan Pavlov. Behavior-therapy techniques differ from psychiatric methods, particularly psychoanalysis, in that they are predominately symptom (behavior) oriented and shows little or no concern for unconscious processes, achieving new insight, or effecting fundamental personality change. The U.S. psychologist B.F. Skinner, who worked with mental patients in a Massachusetts State hospital, popularized behavior therapy. From his work in animal learning, Skinner found that the establishment and extinction of responses can be determined by the way reinforces, or rewards, are given. The pattern of reward giving, both in time and frequency, is known as a schedule of reinforcement. The gradual change in behavior in approximation of the desired result is known as shaping. More recent developments in behavior therapy emphasize the adaptive nature of cognitive processes. Behavior-therapy techniques have been applied with some success to such disturbances as enuresis (bed-wetting), tics, phobias, stutteri...
Have you ever wondered if being an introvert or an extrovert actually has an affect on how your life will turn out? Although the difference between being introverted and extroverted is somewhat ambiguous, most experts on human behavior agree that it is mainly determined through the source in which one obtains his or her energy. The scientists were eager to conduct more research related to this concept in order to find a possible correlation between personality traits and one’s biological fitness and quantifiable success.
Before the internet, our characteristics such as style, identity, and values were primarily exposed by our materialistic properties which psychologists define as the extended self. But people’s inferences to the idea of online self vs. offline self insisted a translation to these signals into a personality profile. In today’s generation, many of our dear possessions have been demolished. Psychologist Russell W belk suggest that: “until we choose to call them forth, our information, communications, photos, videos, music, and more are now largely invisible and immaterial.” Yet in terms of psychology there is no difference between the meaning of our “online selves” and “offline selves. They both assist us in expressing important parts of our identity to others and provide the key elements of our online reputation. Numerous scientific research has emphasized the mobility of our analogue selves to the online world. The consistent themes to these studies is, even though the internet may have possibly created an escape from everyday life, it is in some ways impersonating
Getting to know you: Face-to-face versus online interactions was a longitudinal study conducted by Okdie, et. al in the year 2011. Results of the study rendered that computer-mediated communication reduces unity among or between the communicators. A huge number of interactions in this form involved animosity due to the convenience of identity-clouding if one opted to. Moreover, the people involved in online interaction are more self-conscious on how they present themselves and are more cautious with their choice of words. A probable reason beneath these ideas is that people tend to present themselves in a positive note on social networking sites as they have the power to control over the information to share, data to post, and messa...

In our modern day world we are in constant communication with each other through texting, and social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. One’s private and personal life can suddenly be public to the whole world and their whole community. Social media has changed the way people interact with one another, changed our perception of the term “friend”, and has changed how we present ourselves to our community. When conducting a survey on how the social media is affecting our social environment, my hypothesis was that people behave differently behind a screen than in a face-to-face interaction. I came to this hypothesis by conducting research, and from common day-to-day observation. After conducting the survey I found that this hypothesis is true. Social media is affecting out social environments in a negative way by changing peoples behaviours behind a screen and creates an environment based on self-promotion.
Purpose of Study Individuals should understand that the use or nonuse of social media has negative and positive effects on their lives, whether they recognize them or not. Students who excessively use social networking applications can be negatively affected because they are spending too much time on these applications rather than paying attention in class, completing homework, studying, sleeping, or focusing on their own health and condition. However, these same students who are excessive users are often times the students who are more aware of global issues and updates in pop culture through the use of social media. Students who moderately use social networking applications spend a good amount of time on these applications and are still able to manage time for sleeping, practicing good eating habits, homework, and studying. These students are usually just as aware, or slightly less aware, than students who excessively use social networking.

Social media networks, or what Boyd and Ellison (2008) refer to as “Social network sites” (“SNSs”), are defined as web-based services that enable users to: “(1) construct a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system, (2) articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and (3) view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system” (p. 211). Social media networks have become part of everyday life for millions of Americans. According to PEW Research Center’s “Social media update 2013” a majority 73% of online adults today use at least one social media network, while 42% use two or more (Duggan & Smith, 2014). The essential features of social media networks include profiles, friends, comments and private messaging. Profiles are unique pages where users can ‘type themselves into being’ (Boyd & Ellison, 2002, p. 211) by posting numerous forms of multimedia and basic information about themselves. A user’s "friends” include other people within the social network with whom they have a relationship. Commenting are mechanisms by which users may post messages on friends’ profiles that are generally visible to the entire network. Private messaging, similar to e-mail, allows users to send message visible only to specific users or groups of users (Boyd & Ellsion, 2002, p. 212). Differences among the various social media networks available are primarily dependent on the level and types of integrated information and communication tools including mobile connectivity, blogging, and photo and video-sharing (Boyd & Ellison, 2002, p. 210). As of early 2014, the five of the most popular social networks in order are: Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Twitter, and Instagram (Duggan & Smith, 20...
One could argue that the effects of social networking sites could make an individual more inwards due to the lack of direct social contact. As the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine suggests (in Sigman, 2009) “Social networking encourages us to ignore the social networks that form in our non-virtual communities”. However as Lewis & West (2009) found, Facebook seems to have the opposite effect and encourages an individual to be more social in some ways due to the structure of the site as it is less direct than a phone call and with no monetary costs attached to it, but always with the ability to communicate with multiple people at one time with other individuals about to respond to a message and view others responses. If a person does become inward and slightly withdrawn from society through Facebook, then most likely they may have possessed these traits already as Dwyer’s research of behaviour offline suggests that even “some people will always be more inclined to socialise than others” (2000). This maybe due to their own personality traits rather than the effects of Facebook on an individual. As Amichai-Hamburger & Vinitzky discovered in their 2010 study, introverted individuals seem to transfer their pattern of behaviour from offline to online, which is reflected in the smaller volume of ‘Facebook Friends’ in comparison with those with extroverted personalities. As was stated earlier by Ross (2009), Facebook’s structure is mainly offline to online therefore those who are introverted in reality and have trouble forming friendships offline, will have fewer friends who can be added as ‘Facebook friends’ so their lack of social circle size is not a result of Facebook, it merely highlights it.
Social media users see other people differently because much of the content posted on social media, which led to exalting users and revealing unnecessary information. When one first logs into a social media site such as Facebook, the first things that ...
Trait approach covers the big five personality traits: extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience. These five traits have been identified as the most identifiable personality traits, even across cultures and societies. According to McCrae, Costa, and Busch’s (1986) study on personality system comprehensiveness, the big five personality model included the five traits most identified with by individuals asked to describe themselves and others. I found this segment of the class especially intriguing as it helped me not only learn so much about myself, but also take a deeper look into the personality of my family, peers, and even strangers. I am also more conscious of how I self-monitor my personality traits. For example, I am very much so an introverted person but at times I try to be extroverted based off the environment. In highly social environments, I consciously smile and try to talk to people because I want to be perceived in a favorable light, not actually because I feel the need to be sociable. In other words, I don’t want to be perceived as odd. I believe I developed this form of self-monitoring because when I am introverted at social events people will constantly ask me if I’m ok since I’m quiet, which makes me uncomfortable as they make me the focus. Being the center of attention makes me anxious, and therefore to prevent that I have developed being a fake-extrovert to avoid it. This exemplified how I apply self-monitoring to my everyday life. Trait approach gave me insight into how to identify vastly accepted personality traits, as well as, how each of these traits can be influenced and
There has also been a rise in the number of studies done on people’s behavior and personality differences when using social media, experts are becoming more and more interested in the effects social media has on our decision making and behavior. These studies are based on the “big five” personality traits [a term originally coined by Lew Goldberg, (1981)]. The five personality traits that this term refers to are extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism and openness to experiences. By basing these studies on the big five traits this allows us to have some insight on why people post what they post and what personality types are most likely to alter certain characteristics about themselves when using social media
In addition, social media changed the way of living and the working level of many people like organizing vacations and researching for school and university projects. With attributes that may affect the way people interact online, social media open a new ways for many newspapers, magazines to publish their issues online to promote their ideas quickly and to let the people in contact with their news and to make more productivity and make more money. Also, they can listen to any type of music, reads books, story, purchase any product, buy clothe online...
