Personality Development of Joseph Paul Franklin

Defense mechanisms are solidly defined by Freud and his daughter, Anna, who published more distinct descriptions of the mechanisms the ego uses as defense in The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defense, published in 1936 (2013). One of the strengths of the use of these mechanisms is that they are also neatly packed away in distinct definitions, all with two commonalities that hold the theory together: defense mechanisms are unconscious behaviors and they are the mind’s tool for falsifying reality in order to not have to face it head-on (2013). One might argue as a weakness of Freud’s work, however, that defense mechanisms need not be negative, though the majority of the time they are applied as such. For instance, the three levels of anxiety Freud argued were addressed by these defense mechanisms are vague at best and do not entail the entirety of anxieties of the modern age. However, for use with Franklin’s life this tool is as Erikson’s tool, useful and appropriate. It offers a means of which to study Franklin’s actions himself where Erikson’s theory will offer a means to chronicle what happened to Franklin and how that helped him develop his identity. These are two very different tests but they serve different and equally important purposes, as does the Five Factor Model trait analysis. This analytic tool is decidedly short on weaknesses because of its history of development and the trait analyses tools that have come before it from which it could be honed. McCrae and John argue that “Research using both natural language adjectives and theoretically based personality questionnaires supports the comprehensiveness of the model and its applicability across observers and cultures.” This strength – its applicability and comprehensiveness... ... middle of paper ... ...rojection was most evident during what Erikson labeled the adolescent stage of life, used to protect himself from a failed marriage and lack of identity. Instead of seeing his own emotions and damage, he declared everything else damaged, blaming the blacks for his hardship, Bobbie Louise, his wife, etc. He projected feeling uncomfortable in his own skin to those around him.
