Nature refers to heredity, the influence of inherited characteristics on personality, physical growth, intellectual growth, and social interactions. And nurture refers to the influence of the environment on all those same things and includes parenting styles, physical surroundings, economic factors, and anything that can have an influence on development does not come from within the person (White 312-313). Natures contribute to our personality and behavior is just stuff that we get from our genes that will be predominantly consist of our parent’s personality or at least someone in the family. I believe that it’s just instructions for how to build and maintain the body and the brain. For example, if a parent is an alcoholic or drug addict the child he or she has, will have a major tendency to be one as well regardless if the parent is in the child’s life. So, your genes provide at least a basic sort of starting blueprint for how your brain should be laid out. The characteristics that are inherited from our parents are known as a fixed characteristic. Fixed characteristics are things that are in general not changeable. In other words, they are the skills we acquire and learn through our experiences and exposure to certain environments. Some early theorists argued the Tabula Rausa idea, that we are all born blank slates, that its one-hundred percent socialization. For example, you’re sitting in the back, you’re being quiet, and respectful, you raise your hand when you want to speak. In which these are all characteristics of you’ve been socialized to engage with people in an educational setting, you know what the correct behavior is, because you’ve been socialized into the expectations of our society.
