The entirety of my identity mostly consists of an anthology of my stories, poems and art. Still, I struggled to let my stories be heard properly. Until, a little more than two years ago I came across spoken word poetry, and felt that I discovered a whole new medium of self-expression and a community full of quirky, gawky, and amazing poets in love with the art form as well. In the indulgence of my literary passion, I’ve realized that it is a perfect medium for me to channel my love for writing into a performance both equally inspired and inspiring. Taking inspiration from my own life, my city’s growth, the people around me and poets who came before, I have an irrepressible desire to write my story and inspire others to write theirs in the process. It is for this very reason that I have chosen to study Creative Writing in order to sharpen my writing skills and use them effectively.
My love for poetry has led me to become part of innumerable experiences that have shaped my own writing and my personality as a whole. Aside, from influences of artists like Allen Ginsberg, Sylvia Plath, Shane Koyczan and Bill Watterson, my own journey has led me through a path that has been instrumental towards carving my writing style and identity. Starting as a winner of a small slam poetry competition, I went on to compete in much larger events, perform at various venues, build friendships and collaborate with artists from a thriving community of writers, poets, musicians and teachers within and outside my country. As a member of a Nepali Spoken Word Poetry, the Word Warriors, I have also held multiple workshops and taken the art form to different places. Over the past year, I worked as part of a Word Warriors team that held a two week tour in West...

... of emotional and creative expression. I feel proud to have pursued this passion and collaborated with talented street, studio and visual artists while painting murals for a Human Rights Film Festival and Global Hand washing Awareness Day, organizing poetry events with live paintings, and creating a performance art piece in cohesion with poetry, visual art and original music. Therefore, it has been an immeasurable part of my artistic drive that perfectly supports my writing as well.
It is impossible to fully gauge one’s accomplishments and involvements in the future but I am confident that with an undergraduate education in Creative Writing, I can finally pursue a career in the literary field with greater expertise and verve. I will be able to make a difference in my community by spreading poetry and making it a medium to inspire people and let stories be heard.
Her aspiration was to write, but fell in love with teaching along the way. My dream is to teach, but I fell in love with creative writing along the way. I think my strengths play a big part in my determination to do what I love. Growing up, I was determined that I was going to be a doctor because in my mind that was the only way for me to help others and make my family proud. I had no passion for medicine only the drive to do something good, and then in high school I discovered a passion for the English language that makes me never want to stop learning. Julia Alvarez proves that I can still help people in my chosen field. I can still make a difference. I want to use my intellection and my context and the vast archives of information I store because of my input strength to help shape the minds of future doctors or lawyers or writers or artists or world

My writing is my medium, to impart my values, my beliefs, my ideas, my messages, everything to you. The ability to convey such things is beautiful. But for you to discover and interpret the beauty, to mould the beauty into a new being, is the true beauty of poetry.

... was not present to see. Through poetics and story telling, authors give a more emotional feeling to important events that must be witnessed and remembered. Although resurrecting the past can be a struggle and cause emotional pain, it can also help to soothe people’s spirits. In The House on Mango Street, Ceremony, “Song for a Barbarian Reed Pipe,” and Zoot Suit each tell a unique story that offers a new perspective and understanding of a culture. Texts that offer a look into the multicultural world we all live in, enables us to reconfigure our understanding of diversity and allows us to revaluate the importance and the presence of race and culture in daily life. Through writing and storytelling, we can also extend our knowledge about parallel cultures by exposing ourselves to the differences and similarities between our own culture and that of other groups.
Often I sit at the computer, or with a pen and paper, and I think about what I should write. I reflect on my experiences with life, or with my feelings and emotions. If the subject that I write about is coming from my heart, I could write forever, opposed to something that I do not have interest in like the mating habits of fireflies. I don’t care about how, when, and much less why they procreate. I would always dread having to write a paper for my English class, and it was not until I discovered my own love for poetry that I began to enjoy writing. It was my junior English teacher in San Diego, Howard Estes. He allowed me to open my mind to not only the academic perspective of literature, but also to my own personal connection to this confusing written language. This newfound passion gave me a sort of sixth sense. When I look at something, I not only think about what it means to me, but what it means to the world on a larger scale as opposed to taking everything at face value. Through my own writings, and the writings of others, I have been shaped as a unique individual.
Whoosh!A bed whizzed by, surrounded by about 6 medical personnel. “What’s going on?” I thought immediately with apprehension. I knew whatever was happening it was not ideal. Ensuring I was not in the way, I stood on my toes to see what demanded so much attention. To my astonishment, I saw a coin sized hot-pink little girl. She could not have been bigger than two quarters lying side by side. She was struggling! Even with all the procedures the doctors were executing to save her life, she was performing the most work.
“I write because I love. I write for the survival of self, my children, my family, my community and for the Earth. I write to help keep our stories, our truths, our language alive”. (qtd. in Anthology 396.)
The poetry of Brian Turner, Charlotte Mew, and T. S. Eliot all turned poetry from the status of great to world re-making; they transformed the poetry of their era to poetry that could be read decades later yet still have a profound impact on its audience. I believe that world making lies in a poet’s ability to take any situation, any speaker, and any context that is personally important to them, and create a poem that deeply affects its audience--one with the ability to completely transcribe emotion from a text to the heart.
The ability to articulate my thoughts, aspirations and hardships has been a big part of my recent literacy. From personal essays to an open discussion with a panel. To put my thoughts into words on a paper or have a discussion, I have had the privilege to be heard from many around my city and in other states.
The main thing I found in poetry that I truly love is the abstract concepts the writer can make a poem exhibit. When I right, I tend to write from experience, or using vocabulary, testimony which I believe creates a more personal connection to your poetry and you. I found that I was able to write philosophically and what I felt in order to make my readers and me think more in depthly about the topic. With my new found knowledge in poetry I was able to watch my poems evolve from a mediocre freeform, to a well thought out piece of poetry. My poetry later in the semester would utilized linguistics, rhyme scheme, and a flow pattern that would please the eye and give particular lines emphasis. Furthermore, the goals and plans I would have for poetry in my life are unknown as of now. I enjoy writing poetry, I get comfort from it, but in my future I hope to concentrate on a more narrative form of writing, like books, short stories, and screenplays. However, what I’ve learned in this class will benefit my writing greatly outside of the poetry field, the techniques that help capture us in our writing, as well as those that captivate our

Reading and writing has always played a vital part in my life. From toddler to adult, pre-elementary to college, I’ve managed to sharpen both skills to my liking. However, even though it significantly helped, schooling was not what influenced me to continue developing those skills into talent. Many different things shaped and influenced my learning, and now reading and writing have become the safety net of my life. I know that even if I have nothing else in the future, I’ll still have my talent and knowledge. To ensure my success, I hope to further develop those skills so that I may fulfill my wishes.
Some people express themselves through beautiful art; others are masters of the page and speak silently through writing. I, on the other hand, express myself with the greatest instrument I have, my voice.
I enjoy writing very much. My writing topics and style tend to match my eclecticity, though I enjoy the role of an essayist-poet most of all. I have written many instructional articles, though I have lately stayed away from them due to my over-exercise of that area of writing. I enjoy poetry, and while few poets ever put bread on the table and write substantial amounts of poetry, I am not motivated by anything primarily for money and find poetry an expressive way to communicate things that prose is unable to.
