In Mexicali B.C. Mexico during May 1998, my mother was taking me to school and we ran into one of the neighbors and I forgot to greet them. I remember my mother slap me in the side of the head. She told me that “being politeness, does not make you weak”. From that day, I learn that I had to greet and it does not matter if I did not like that individual or if I was angry at something Else. This can be something insignificant to others, but this is where my ethics began. My parents had a core foundation of catholic religion, but they put a twist of their own personal ethics and morals, specially my father because he was in the Mexican military. This is one of the reasons, I believe my ethics are based on personal values and ethical principles. I remember attending Sunday church and listening to the priest explaining the 10 commandments. Commandment number IV got my attention because it states “Honor your father and mother” (Donovan, 2016). I never question my parents the way of teaching us on what was right and wrong. For instance, they believe in spanking us, but as we got older they explain us that it’s a difference between spanking and being abusive parents because they had a close friend that they will beat their kids for any reason. The Air Force has three core values that are Integrity First, Service Before Self and Excellence In All We Do. (Schwartz, 2012) The core value has integrity first because being active duty you are 365 days, 24 hours, 7 days week on call. We always need to do the right thing even though when no one is watching because we don’t only represent the base you are station but United States. My career is a jet engine mechanic and sometimes we have work by ourselves and we cannot be tempt it to cut corners to finish a job quicker because of your personal desires. Then “Service before self” describes that we don’t have to be selfish and you don’t have to put your personal wants versus what you can offer to the Air Force and your country. In my personal experience, my oldest daughter was 3 months old when I left to Korea for a year. Yes, it broke my heart but my devotion to my military path and dedication, I sacrifice my personal needs. At last, is “excellence in all we do.” We have to have pride in what we do on a daily basis. We cannot only give 100%, but we have to go above and beyond. I recall when I was deployed to Balad Air Base Iraq. I work 50 days on 12-14 hour shift because we were short manned. When someone complaint or when I was getting tired I remember that I was fighting for the freedom of my love ones and my country. I base my

The seven Army values, the three Navy core values, and the three Air Force core values: each branch of service possesses a codification of values and characteristics embodied by servicemen and women for generations; simply picking a handful of these qualities presents a logical and justifiable option for defining the essential qualities of a military officer. It is true an officer must personify and uphold such values, however, interpersonal skills and self-confidence are also invaluable traits necessary for the highest level of leadership and excellence demanded of a military officer.
In this essay I have explained how my background and values led me to a career in the United States Air Force, my most important experiences while serving, and how my job allows me to contribute to the larger Air Force mission. The core values are Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage. The Army’s definition respect is, “Treat people as they should be treated. In the Soldier’s Code, we pledge to “treat others with dignity and respect while expecting others to do the same.” Respect is what allows us to appreciate the best in other people. Every day, in a plethora of different situations, virtually every person has to make a multitude of decisions regarding how to interact with other people. Despite many centuries of intense study and theorizing by some of the most brilliant philosophers in the world, there is no single consensus on how people should choose to act towards others. What have been developed, however, are different systems of ethics describing idealized ideas of how human beings should treat themselves, treat others, and what they should strive for both personally and for society as a whole. In addition, many people cobble together their own personal systems of ethics based on personal experience and various degrees of formal ethical education.
According to the ABC News survey, 73 percent of Americans feel manners are worse today than they were 20 or 30 years ago. Although character education is a hot topic in schools across the nation, education in maners often receives scant attention; with growing demands on teaching time, etiquette is rarely a priority. It might be a mistake to ignore the adage that actions speak louder than words, however. Teachers who teach manners said they notice a real difference in students' attitudes, in the way they treat one another, and in their schoolwork. Although some might say that manners are to be taught from the parents, the places children learn to socialize are not only at home, but also at school; it is their second home. A child either learns different moral values from his home or from his school. These days with both of the parents working, a child rarely gets the opportunity to learn moral and social values from home. In the past, although the parents were working, grandparents took care of their grandchildren and taught them important lessons of life, however, this is no longer prevalent as more and more families get unconcerned of teaching manners to young people. Of course not all the parents are failing to teach manners, but it is surprising to see many adults who do not know the correct ways of being respectful. Then how are they to educate their children? Thus, the only way we can ensure our future generation to learn etiquette is by schools.
According to Willard (n.d.), the ethical body can be examined by evaluating the personality, actions, and character of an individual. My own ethical characteristics includes being honest, fair, compassionate, courageous, patient, and generous. These characteristics developed through learned behavior and actions that led to my current ethical body.
We human beings live in a society. The society or the social world we live in is based on human cooperation. In other words, the individuals in a society do not live in an isolated self-centered world. The human interactive system presupposes ethical and moral standpoint from which we operate. My personal ethical system is based on “service before self” and “love your neighbors as yourself”.
As a child, you probably don’t consider the meaning of such phraseology as “Code of Ethics”. In fact, I don’t recall that phrase ever coming into play. However, there were guiding principles that were modelled daily, and by extension we were expected to adopt and incorporate into our daily lives. I could not have imagined how her lessons, her modelling, her guiding principles would become such a solid foundation upon which I could build my personal and professional life. Respect and honesty were givens. It was something you practiced daily, no matter how challenging the moment might have been. These were gifts you gave yourself, for they made you the better person. I was raised by parents who always stressed for us to be respectful and honest people. We were taught the rights and the wrongs of life. We were taught not only to conduct ourselves in this manner at home, but to also carry these beliefs into the work world and the world in general. But, I am aware that I am human and have made mistakes in my life that have questioned my ethics. Then again, there have been many experiences, personal and work related to where I struggled.
There are so many things that are important to me, but only a few that could greatly affect my life if I didn’t have or accomplish them. The biggest things to me are success, family, and freedom. These are all things that are essential to my life in so many different aspects.
I am fortunate to have realized my faith in god in early years of my life and experiences in life have only strengthened my faith; I was born and raised in a small town in India and my elementary to undergraduate education has been from a Christian, catholic school, Convent of Jesus & Mary, a congregation established by Mother Claudine Thevnet who wanted to undertake the education of girls in India. It was in school, I first experienced the introduction to Christianity and my family being Hindu resonated a lot of common values being taught at school. Since there was no conflict in my values learnt at school and those at home, these were only deepened and have become an important part of my personality. As a result of my upbringing and my education, memories of my faith are amongst my earliest. I believe in the presence of god and I believe that god has bigger plans for me. My education and my family has integrated values in me for respecting, accepting, understanding other members of the society. Hinduism taught me how to be respectful and tolerant to others, it taught me that I need to understand that I am a human and I am here to serve and help others in need. There have been times when faced with difficult challenges in life and I have followed the path laid by god, ignorance went away and I found solutions and answers to the problems and challenges that I faced.
Understanding who we are as individuals can be a struggle for people throughout life. It can be difficult to comprehend who we are and why we exist. There are daily outside influences that help create who we are and what our values are. Values play a significant role in our lives. They shape the choices we make and reveal a big part of our identity to the world. Some values may be more important than others, but they still manage to influence our lives in one way or another, whether we know it or not. Values can range from a tangible item to an idea that has influenced us to stand by and remember those values. The values we hold with the highest importance act as a guide and help us prioritize our purpose and goals in our daily life. My family has taught me a list of values and traits that have helped me become a well-rounded individual. I value my family more than anything because most of my core inner values have started from their teachings at one point or another. My top values that I have developed from my family are dedication, honesty, and wisdom. I will discuss who I am in terms of the important values that shape my personal belief system and decision making framework that, in essence, describes the direction of my life.
Both of my grandparents raised my own parents when being young kids into having discipline, responsibilities and obligations. Back in the day, the years were different and it required a lot more education/principles. Education has been one of the most maybe top five of me, my character. Since what I remember by parents always taught me the right path, not wrong, they always tried to fix my mistakes so I wouldn 't repeat them or make myself look bad in front of other people. They wanted me to be an educated person with principles, but I never understood why
My personal vision of the future is not something I have taken a significant amount of time to ponder in the past. I have general ideas of where I see myself both personally and professionally in future but have not identified specific steps to get there or pondered why I want to be in that situation. When taking on this somewhat daunting task of identifying my future self it is important to identify my driving values, philosophy, dreams, and my personal calling. Self-reflection on these characteristics and preferences are key to a developing a successful picture of the future.
In contemporary time, people, young and old, have lost the value of manners. Words simple as “Please” and “Thank You”, make a difference in the way we approach others. Being polite and respectful at all times with anyone—especially parents and teachers, classmates, friends—is crucial for the way our society develops in the course of time, but where is it that we learn these values? Even though schools teach manners and respectfulness, manners should be taught at home where respect and discipline lead to good social manners to be better prepared for society in the future.
