As a social work professional, you must take into account your own personal values before you can be an effective worker in this field. Social workers sometimes need to put their own values aside when working with clients who don’t share their same ideals. Clients are diverse and are not going to always have the same values that the worker has. Social workers need to be professional and adhere to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) guidelines when working with any client. I have a long list of values that I find very important to me, but there is a few that stand out the most. I’ve known so many people who have had their lives cut short unexpectedly. You never can really know when your last day is, so why waste it doing things that don’t make you happy? So many people settle for less, just because it is easier and more comfortable. Life is short to begin with, and it can be cut even shorter at any possible moment. I think people should take risks and aim for the things that will ultimately leave them satisfied with their life. The six core values that are described in the Code of Ethics by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) are social justice, service, importance of human relationships, dignity and worth of a person, integrity, and competence. According to the NASW (2016), these core values are the foundation for the purpose of the social work profession. It is essential for social work professionals to be able to put aside their personal values, and embody these core values when working with clients. Defined by the NASW (2016), social justice is the idea that everyone is entitled to equal economic, political, and social rights and opportunities. This is one of the main goals social workers aim to achieve. There are many injustices occurring in the world today, such as wage inequalities, institutional racism, and the amount of people living in poverty. The value of service involves the social worker placing the needs of the client above personal interests. The social worker accesses their knowledge base to assist clients and engage in social problems to evoke change. Additionally, social workers are expected to be philanthropists by allocating time to pro-bono work. It is expected that such contributions are categorized as volunteerism and does not include the service provided in the professional setting where there are earnings involved. Social justice lies at the foundation of social work. Social workers continuously strive to advocate for vulnerable and disenfranchised clients facing oppression and social injustice. The professional social worker will also work from. A systematic skill base and evidence based practice, but also a value and ethics based practice. Values are basically how professional people should treat service users with a deep understanding of right and wrong. Vigilante (1974) (cited in Barnard, A.2008) calls values the ‘fulcrum of practice’. These values and ethics benefit the service user as they receive a professional service in the professional relationship.
The following paper aims to discuss and analyze the way in which my personal values intersect with the values I hold as most important within the profession of social work. It would stand to reason that these values would stand on common ground; however, there are places where my personal and professional values diverge. These conflicts may prove to be problematic within my chosen career unless I find a way to prioritize my values, or find ways for them to work harmoniously with each other.
Ethics are an important part of social work. The NASW Code of Ethics guides a social worker on how to do their job in a way that effectively accomplishes what the social worker sets out to do. Often, though, dilemmas arise that pin our ethics against what could be called our “better judgment”. When this happens, the social worker has to decide between doing their job as they committed to when entering the profession, and looking out for the best interest of themselves or others that goes against the code.
The social work profession is not only about the knowledge of the theories, ethical guidelines, values and principles of the profession, but also it’s about applying that knowledge to everyday situations. It is a profession dedicated to enhancing human capacity to solve complex social problems in order to create a more humane and just society (Arizona State University, 2013). In the profession, social workers are encourage to use their skills such as their critical thinking and especially their decision-making skills. In addition, they work in a number of different settings with diverse individuals. Although dilemmas will arise, social workers need to be culturally competent to work with others and to avoid breaching any ethical standards.
As social workers we must learn to stand up for our values but be able to put our differences aside and connect with the next. I may not agree with it but I understand it. Social workers also need to know with who they are dealing with. What is the clients background, their culture, the language their beliefs. Being knowledgeable gives us the opportunity to better connect, relate and understand our clients. Having dignity and integrity are important values to uphold because it means that we never have to sacrifice time or energy questioning ourselves. The profession has an obligation to articulate its basic values, ethical principles, and ethical standards. When first considering the profession of social work, I was enamoured by the fact that the social work ethics and values are the same as what I was already living my life by: kindness, nonjudgement, social liberalism, and social justice. I chose the profession with the expectation that I would uphold the code of ethics, but I was not entirely sure what that would look like in my practice. So far, in my practicum, I have already started seeing clients and have begun counselling in conjunction with problem solving. Already, I can see areas where I have to defend social work values in the workplace where they are not being upheld by the agency. For example, I value keeping client information confidential, but there are instances where there are not enough private meeting rooms and I am forced to meet with clients in a general office space. I have spoken to my supervisor about this and hopefully will see a change during the second term. Additionally, the agency uses volunteers to meet with clients and these volunteers violate many aspects of social work ethics. As a social worker, there are many core values to follow. Some of which include “Respect for human rights and dignity, promotion of social justice and human well being, recognizing the worth and uniqueness of every person, and the importance of the community” (C. Understanding who we are as individuals can be a struggle for people throughout life. It can be difficult to comprehend who we are and why we exist. There are daily outside influences that help create who we are and what our values are. Values play a significant role in our lives. They shape the choices we make and reveal a big part of our identity to the world. Some values may be more important than others, but they still manage to influence our lives in one way or another, whether we know it or not. Values can range from a tangible item to an idea that has influenced us to stand by and remember those values. The values we hold with the highest importance act as a guide and help us prioritize our purpose and goals in our daily life. My family has taught me a list of values and traits that have helped me become a well-rounded individual. I value my family more than anything because most of my core inner values have started from their teachings at one point or another. My top values that I have developed from my family are dedication, honesty, and wisdom. I will discuss who I am in terms of the important values that shape my personal belief system and decision making framework that, in essence, describes the direction of my life.
Prior to having the class of Professional Values and Ethics, I assumed I understood the basic concepts of what defines a professional who has competence of values and ethics. Nevertheless, by being enrolled in this course, I have gained great knowledge of which professional values and ethical principles must be held by a social worker, which I did not know before. Progressively in this class, by learning professional values and ethics, my motivation to succeed as an upcoming social worker has gotten stronger.
