Becoming a Doctor
The Profession
Doctors are compassionate, mission-driven professionals who are committed to helping people, proud of their ability to treat patients and proud to be able to diagnose illnesses. Doctors are mostly inspired by the trust their patients put in them. Doctors discover functions of the human body, learn to interpret patients’ diseases and they gain confidence as they progress to determine illnesses. Doctors also have an opportunity to specialise from a range of different areas where they meet incredible people. These reasons are key points for why I would like to pursue a medical career. The doctor needs to make sure the patient is comfortable in the environment before any treatment occurs. If there is poor communication the patient may be diagnosed incorrectly or given the wrong prescription. Doctors learn to improve their own way of communication over time and patients learn to trust their doctor. Doctors should try to comprehend the situation from the patient’s view and recognize their beliefs, feelings and ethics when trying to overcome the communication barrier. To enter into first year of either Bachelor of Heath Science or Bachelor of Science you must have a National Certificate of Educational Achievement at level three with a minimum of 250 points or, academic achievements similar to this. For myself I plan to enter first year by completing a certificate in Health Science at level four through Whitireia Polytechnic. During the first year in University you must meet an average B+ grade for the whole year to get into a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB). However, at the end of the first year you have to sit a test and have an interview to gain entry into second year and the people that had scored a higher grade, such as an A+, would be at a bigger advantage of gaining entry.
