Personal Statement: Wine Internship

You are probably wondering how I got my internship since I have no experience in the wine field and don't have a background in the wine business or fermentation science. Here is how I went from an agriculture econ student with a slight interest in wine to obtaining an internship months later. This just goes to show that with persistence anyone can strive towards their dreams and make things happen.

My Background
I'm an Applied Economic Management, International Trade & Development major who has no experience working at a winery or anything having to do with grapes. The only knowledge I have comes from the book I have read and the Geography of Wine class I am currently taking from Virginia Tech. Reading about wine is what got me interested in the industry and all it has to offer my future.

I knew that since I was under 21 it would be hard to get a paid internship while competing against college students above 21 with more applicable majors. I knew that meant I needed to live at home and not be Charlottesville, VA paying rent while making no income. I decided to zero in on the wineries I had researched that were within an hour or less of my house. I found a couple but there was one that stuck out to me that had a structured internship program, Grayhaven Winery. I nervously called the winery, and I was able to speak to the owner about their program. It was nerve-racking sitting in my driveway talking to someone who could make or break my summer with one phone call. That is me being overdramatic, I just didn't want her to say no because I really wanted to work there. She seemed interested to hear from me so we set a date to meet.
