Recommended: A speech on how i give back to my community
Why do teenagers volunteer? Partly because school forces us to do so in order to graduate, but a bigger part is the joy of giving. The pure satisfaction that we can give back to our community or put a smile on someone’s face makes up for all the hard work. I moved to Virginia in the summer before eighth grade. In the two years I have been here so far I have chosen to give back to the community because I was given such a warm welcome. In all the seven states I have lived in I have never been greeted so warmly. My first Christmas here, firefighters came by my neighborhood and handed put candy canes and I decided at that moment, I would repay them.
Halfway through my eight grade year, I volunteered to make brownies for my local fire station. I baked for three hours and on a wintery Sunday afternoon I buzzed the doorbell at the fire station. The firemen and firewomen faces lighted up with joy when they realized the treats were for them. They welcomed me in and gave me a tour of the fire station, but the smile on their faces was enough thanks for me. I baked brownies for firefighters twice and loved their ecstatic reaction each time. Out of my two major opportunities volunteering, baking brownies for firefighters gave me the most satisfaction because I was able to see the joy brought to their eyes immediately.

The main focus for this club is volunteer work, and for Christmas we sold Christmas trees. I was responsible for explaining prices, collecting money, and taking the wrap off the trees. I worked for a total of four hours and enjoyed every minute of it, I faced no problems, everyone was in a good mood because of the holidays. Having co-workers made the work more enjoyable. I learned a lot more form selling Christmas trees than from baking brownies. I realized the importance of people skills and how getting along with your fellow co-workers is
I have volunteered at the Salvation Army and have had some wonderful experiences there. For the past years I have been involved in helping children with their homework and I have read books to them. It feels really good when you see the children face expression when they finally get something it is a really good experience. The YMCA is another place I have volunteered, during my volunteering moments at the YMCA I felt like I helped the community so much. During the YMCA we had a chance to volunteer with the children’s hospital to take pictures around the community and write about what it affects us on. This was a great experience because it gave me a chance to speak up not only for me but for other people that probably think the same.
I want to share the experience that I got from reading to the little kids in Washington school. This had been my first time doing community service so I was a little nervous, I didn't think that the kids where going to like me. But when I go to the school and saw the lovable little kids I felt much better. When we got into little groups and started reading they started hugging me and reading along. They made me feel good and I was ready to come back next Thursday. This was the greatest experience that I had ever had, I felt like a teacher and it fells great to have those little kids liking you.
Every year the Future Business Leaders of America group in my school organizes Thanksgiving baskets that are provided to families within the community who are in need and who otherwise would be without a Thanksgiving dinner. Serving as secretary of the club my junior and senior years I have had the honor of being directly involved with the making and handing out of the baskets. I organize the gathering of the goods and donations for the turkeys and gift cards that are provided within the baskets. These two years I have had the chance of personally handing the baskets to the families who are receiving them. When handing the out the baskets I see how thankful the families are for all of the hard work that I put into the baskets. The experience
The first time I started volunteering was last year and it changed my perspective towards a lot of things; from the way of looking at people to how my mind works. The impact it's had on my life has been immense and life changing. From there, I constantly tried getting myself involved in giving a hand and at the same time, to widen my knowledge.
During the summer or even on weekends my mom would take me with her to go help out her patients. Which included bathing them, feeding them, and caring for them. Not only did I help my mom with her patients but I would always help rake leaves, pick up trash and make their yard look nice. I can’t even image how they would’ve done all the things I did for them with their fragile bodies. I’m glad I was there for them and made a difference. Aside from helping my mom’s patients. I helped an elderly man who was on fire in his backyard. It was around spring time and I heard someone screaming yelling “help” so I went around to look and there he was on fire. I tried so hard to put out the fire and it felt like mission impossible but I did not give up even though the ambulance were on the way. He was burnt pretty bad, but I was so glad I found him. Who knows it could’ve been worse! He is still alive till this day and sits on his porch waiting for me to pass by his house every morning to say good morning. It’s such a wonderful feeling to know that I not only changed a life but I saved
We talked with various firemen, and they were overjoyed about our donation of roughly forty stuffed animals. On of the men from our church is a volunteer firefighter, and he led me over to the place where I was to place my animals. When it was time for me to give my favorite animal away, I kissed it and said a prayer for the lucky child who would receive my beloved animal. I placed it in the cubbyhole with the others in the truck and felt that I had accomplished something
Monday evening was my first act of prosocial behavior of the week. As a military dependent that lives a base, I thought it would be a nice gesture to do something for active duty military members in reason to thank members for serving our country. In contribution to prosocial behavior, I made dozens chocolate covered strawberries and delivered them to the building my father works in. While I delivering strawberries, I looked at several Navy sailors and thanked them for their service. I was surprised at how thankful some people were in reaction to my delivery. It made me happy to see that the smallest things can bring people such joy.
I love volunteering for Rock the Block. It has really opened my eyes to the needs of my community. Rock the Block happens three times a year. Easter, Back to School, and Christmas. Easter we give out groceries and turkeys or hams, that has been donated. We have face painting,
In addition, I have helped with the Summer Reading Program by entering how many hours the kids have read so they can earn the corresponding prizes. Apart from that, I always participate in the charity drives at Central, like Caring and Sharing, by donating money or supplies to the less fortunate families or the troops so they can also enjoy the holiday season. There is no such thing as too much volunteering and everyone should enthusiastically be willing to sacrifice a little bit of their time to offer aid to their
The Christmas in October Program is an annual event I participated in that helps someone who is less fortunate by fixing up their home. It is a two-day event where exterior and interior work is done on a home. The program requires a company to sponsor the project, and volunteers to do the actual work. It is called Christmas in October because it takes place in October, but feels like Christmas because of its memorable effect. Participating in the Christmas in October Program was the most meaningful work I've done because of its lasting effect on me.
We performed a random act of kindness at the Aurora fire station. Brittney, one of the members, suggested that it was a really good idea. She got the idea because she watches the show “Chicago Fires.”Our whole group agreed because we think that firefighters don’t get recognized as much for their work as much as police officers do. Also, many firefighters are strong and brave so we thought that it was a really amazing idea.
The boy was so excited, and kept on saying how he had always wanted Legos for his own, but that Santa never got them for him. It broke my heart to know that the boy’s parents could not buy him the toy. However, it was rewarding to know that I helped this boy get to play with a toy he would not have had access to otherwise. After volunteering, I felt accomplished, since I was able to help people in less fortunate situations than my
I’ve always had a passion for helping others and I love the idea of being considered a dependable person. I enjoy when others come to me to talk about the hardship they are experiencing and being able to provide them with feedback or helpful advice. To do this I learned that you need to have the characteristics of a “people person”. You must be patient, which from my job experience of working in retail and the fast food industry, I would consider myself to be a highly patient person. I also posses the the skill of being outgoing and friendly. I allow myself to be comfortable when speaking with different types of people and I let myself open up so I can personally relate to them. By doing this I believe that others will return the comfort that I created and will want
A few years ago when there was a shooting at an elementary school everyone was challenged to do twenty-five random acts of kindness, for the twenty-five lives lost. About a week later my sister and great-grandmother went to the store to pick up some food. While they were there they got scratch off tickets. The ticket got them one dollar so they bought another one, they went to a table so they could scratch it better and they found another ticket that somebody had left there.
A reflection of my volunteering experience can be summarized in two words: Life-changing. It is hard to explain the feelings that occur when you involve yourself in selfless acts for your community, such as volunteering. There is a feeling in your heart that you cannot ignore, maybe it is the happiness you feel or the overflow of emotions in helping others. In other words, it is a feeling in which you want to share with others. Maybe with a friend, maybe a classmate, maybe a family member, or maybe even a stranger. Either way, spreading how life-changing volunteering can be is a great start to making a positive change in your community by simply by involving others.
