After having attained a Bachelor’s degree in Zoology and a Master’s degree in Gerontology, I felt I should gain some first-hand experience in physical therapy and thus volunteered to work as a caregiver in a reputed Evergreen rehabilitation center Ga. However, while working as a caregiver I realized I needed to learn much more in order to provide better care in meeting the psychological and physical caring needs of the elderly. I have always had the inherent desire to serve the elderly in reducing their hardships and providing them with the much needed physical and psychological support so that they can lead a happy and trouble-free life. In addition, my post graduate studies in gerontology have facilitated me in having a thorough understanding of the aging process and the biological and psychological aspects that need to be considered while caring for the elderly. However, despite having these abilities and the requisite qualifications, I realize that I must imbibe better competencies in physical therapy because of the need to become well versed with the functions, physiology, and anatomy of the human body. Consequently, my interest in physical therapy has increased tremendously, which is why I wish to pursue the course of physical therapy at the University of St Augustine. The learning I will imbibe from the study and training in relation to physical therapy will allow me to not only determine the psychological state of patients but also to assess their functional capacity. In fact, my study in Gerontology has prepared me to know if the hardships of an elderly patient are because of normal aging or because of other circumstances that can be addressed through physical therapy.
