I believe that social workers are one of the most valuable assets a community can have, regardless of what area they serve. Society needs to have citizens who want to better their community in order for that particular community to be successful and functioning. There are many barriers that an individual could have that prevents them from being motivated to better their community such as overwhelming life events, mental illness, negative decisions made in the past, cultural insensitivity, ignorance, and so much more. Among many other things, I believe that it is a social worker’s job to empower disadvantaged individuals in the community and help maximize their opportunities. As the Intensive Family Outpatient Case Manager, it is my job to provide the children and families I serve with the necessary skills that they need to improve their well being and functioning in society. Some of the services I provide are ongoing assessments, problem solving, skills training, supervision, and environmental adaptations to assist the consumer in performing basic daily living activities. I long to further my education enrolled at the University of North Dakota School of Graduate Studies in the Master of Social Work online program so that I can learn how to better serve this population in this capacity.
I have a thirst that cannot be quenched when it comes to learning about how to help families and youth function more effectively in the field of mental health. It is my desire to further my education and become a Therapist at Community Counseling Services as well as eventually work in the Huron school system as a school counselor. I know that the University of North Dakota and will be able to equip me with the proper education to effectively serve the people in my rural community of Huron, South
