Family involvement is critical in the educational development of a child, therefore, it is my responsibility as an educator to help families be proactive in their children’s pedagogy. A student’s learning is dependent upon many influences and a crucial factor is family involvement. Families rely upon the teacher to create a welcoming atmosphere which allows for all parties involved to work as one unit in the proliferation of knowledge. This may be accomplished by encouraging families to volunteer in the classroom, attend school functions, commit to regular parent-teacher conferences and create engaging at-home family activities. The contrived notion of a traditional family does not exist, therefore, I must always be mindful that families come in many forms. It is my job to embrace all families and make all possible efforts to gain insight into individual definitions of family. This may include taking the time to learn about the customs of a family transplanted from another country. What I deem welcoming, may be misinterpreted as being rude, thus, creating an awkwardness; weakening our partnership. Conversely, it may be necessary to seek out peers who speak their native tongue, if language is a barrier. It may prove prudent to utilize online services to gain a greater acumen of a student’s heritage or socio-economic background for enhanced understanding. As I mentioned previously, seeking support groups within the community which mirror a student’s home life will serve the student and provide me with an opportunity to gain knowledge. I, as the teacher, will be a lifelong learner. Furthermore, my having information about different types of family units readily available within the classroom family resource center will demonstrate my commitment to diversity. Conversely, all families will come to value each and be able to provide assistance to one another. It strengthens, not only the classroom family, but the community as well. Of great importance to me, is honoring diversity and I would like diversity to be celebrated annually by having a Family Diversity
Effective partnerships between families and school emerge from a mutual trust, respect and understanding of each other’s values and goals. By maintaining such partnerships, we create a healthy environment for children to develop. All families have something unique to offer and educators need to recognize this and make the most of it by incorporating all families into the school community.
Cultural diversity has been a major issue of concern for several decades, and it has affected institutions of learning, where facilitators have to balance the family and school involvement in enhancing learning. Establishing a meaningful environment for students with diverse backgrounds enhances positive performance in their academic, personal, and professional objectives. A healthy relationship with family members involves identifying the needs of each family’s cultural stand; this is because a culture may play a major role in defining a family’s responsiveness to a school’s involvement. The globalization aspect has facilitated the creation of a multicultural society, and hence the need for an education system that addresses the need to foster a conducive environment for learning. It is imperative to define the essence of family involvement and collaboration in schools’ activities, especially where cultural diversity is concerned.
As a mean to supporting family engagement and child’s learning, it is crucial that programs implement strategies for developing partnerships with families. But do the children benefit from effective family engagement? Family engagement pertains to all young children across ethnic backgrounds and early childhood education programs. Parents from diverse backgrounds, when given direction, can become more engaged with their children. Family Engagement is important for young children’s skill. The skills include literacy, cognitive, math, and social development. At this center, the teachers have the tools to assess each child and the parents are interested in knowing the strengths and supports their child needs. As conferences occur every 6 months, parents also communicate with the school and teachers via email and during drop off and pick up times. Parents who have had negative experiences in education may feel less inclined to be involved in their children’s education (Salend, 2015, pg. 178). LaRocque, Kleiman, and Darling (2011) identified parental involvement as a vital key in student success (pg. 117). If families feel uncomfortable because of prior discrimination or experiences with school, it can decrease parental involvement (Salend, 2015, pg. 178). In order to remedy these problems, schools can try a variety of solutions. Salend (2015) suggests inviting important extended family members to school events (pg. 178). This could help involve the patriarchs and matriarchs of the family and gain trust. Educators should try to address the elders first in order to show mutual respect. In addition to showing respect on a personal level, schools can gain trust by displaying respect in other ways. Making school facilities available for community activities makes the area seem more accessible and welcoming. It can also help parents build more positive experiences with the educational system and overcome the negative experiences. Furthermore, schools should decorate with various cultures in mind (Salend, 2015, pg. 178). A great deal of consideration needs to go into preparing a child for the change that occurs when going from a home/child care atmosphere into a school environment. The Teacher needs to consider the child in its entirety throughout the changeover to scholarly activities. This must include the child’s physical readiness, socio-emotional, and cognitive abilities for learning. It is equally essential to discover ways in which to involve the children's first and most important teachers, their families. The families have the most information about their child's strengths, weaknesses as well as the challenges the child faces. Being able to communicate with the families is vital to teachers in collecting in depth information about their students in order to be better equipped to meet the needs of the children.
Parental involvement promotes the social growth of a child. Children whose parents are involved in their education have many advantages. They have better grades, test scores, long-term academic achievement, attitudes and behavior than those with disinterested mothers and fathers (Gestwicki, 2001). Parents becoming involved in their child's schooling creates extra sources of social constraint to influence the child's behavior (McNeal, 2001). For example, parents talking to their children and becoming involved in the school conveys a message to the child of education being important. A lot of children have two main educators in their life; their parents and their teachers. Parents are their first educators, the majority of what a child learns in the first few years of their life is taught by their parents. It is only when the child starts to attend an early years setting that they start to learn from another educator. Both parents and teachers continue being a major influence on their children's learning all throughout school and for the rest of their lives. The parents and the child's school both have important roles to play in the child's education and should therefore work together as a team. Parents can get involved in many different ways such as; getting involved with the school itself by helping in the classroom or supervising lunch and break times, or for those parents who work in the day and cannot find the time to help at the school they can get involved by; reading to their child at home, assisting with homework and other learning activities, teaching them songs or nursery rhymes and letting them help with everyday tasks like cooking, baking and chores. This can be categorised as: Involvement of parents in the school life or involvement of parents in supporting the individual child at home.
Everyone seems to define family differently, however, the significance of family is the same. For you, family means everything. You can always count on your parents and siblings for help and love. Teachers should begin the school year with building positive relationships with the student’s families. In the book it mentions that there is ongoing research that indicates the benefits of family involvement in children’s education. Some of these benefits mentioned were children earning higher grades, tend to have better attendance, have higher rates of homework completion, and are more motivated and have positive attitudes towards school. There are so many different types of family relationships. Whatever form a family takes; it is an important part of everyone’s life. My family has played an important role in my life. Good family relationships serve as a foundation to interactions with others. Supportive families will help children to thrive. The quality of the family relationship is more important than the size of the family.
