Personal Statement: My Search For A Career In Pharmacy

As my college undergraduate career comes to an end, I recollect the experiences that encouraged me to pursue a degree in pharmacy. I can clearly remember receiving that email from the admissions department of my university saying that I needed to claim my major prior to orientation day. As I read this email my stress levels sky rocketed. I had no idea what major I wanted to be in and I was definitely running out of time. During high school, I followed the medical pathway that my institution offered and I had definitely enjoyed it. This pathway exposed students to healthcare through various programs. However, as I met with my college advisor I received the unexpected news that my university did not offer a pre-pharmacy track and I would have to select some other degree. I ended up majoring in biomedical sciences, which definitely increased my interest in pharmacy. In my courses professors discussed the functions of body systems, but only briefly described how prescribed medications aided to prevent organ failure. My desire to gain knowledge increased and I decided to search for a job as a pharmacy technician. I strongly believed that I would get to understand the mechanisms of medications a bit better if I was in a pharmacy setting. I applied to various pharmacies but did not received an interview as fast as I had hoped. I was patient and eventually received a call from a community pharmacy. I was soon interviewed, hired, and I have been working there for over a year. During this past year I have interacted with many patients that have been extremely thankful for my service. I have loved the role I have played in improving their health. In addition to the all these experiences, I have also learned that educating patients is highly important. Even though the setting at a community pharmacy can be fast paced, it is essential to communicate with patients and address their concerns. As a licensed pharmacist, I would have the opportunity to counsel patients in a beneficial manner. I would be able to influence them and encourage them to make lifestyle changes in order for to achieve the expected results from their medications. I hope to one day hopefully manage my own pharmacy and make health education a priority for all patients. I believe that working as a pharmacist would definitely meet the expectations I have towards a professional career. I would be able to interact with patients while making an impact on them.
