Many years ago, a simple delivery changed the course of my life. I was in my 8th year of teaching, thoroughly loving Middle School science, when a surprise arrived at my classroom door. A very unassuming young man brought a box containing my first computer for use in my classroom. I immediately began planning how this new equipment could impact my students. That one day, that one moment, led me to my intense passion for integrating technology in education.

My actual experience with both teaching and technology began much earlier in my life. I was blessed to grow up in an environment in which learning and creating were highly valued; a family of educators, artists, inventors, and a family business that evolved into a tech venture. …show more content…

This is not to say that it didn’t impact teaching and learning; it did. In the beginning, it allowed me to access new and more relevant information, which is an asset when teaching science. I no longer had to depend on a textbook for instruction. I began writing my own curriculum and pulling activities, facts, labs, presentations, and more from many sources to meet the needs of my students and keep them engaged and on task. It really helped me to grow as a teacher and allowed me to become creative, innovative and much more effective. It also became important to share the process and knowledge with other teachers. I began presenting to my faculty, and eventually to district, state, and national audiences about the changes that technology afforded in my instructional practices. I tried more, learned more, and shared with anyone that would listen. I connected with teachers through email, conferences and social media. Through this, I became part of a global community of educators that could share ideas and best practices. I was no longer limited by the meetings, professional development or curriculum provided by my school and district.
