Having spent the last two years working as a volunteer in the social service field, I have come to realize that my passion lies in helping people, who are in a position of less advantaged. With a view to accomplish my ambition to become a social worker I am currently taking an access to a master degree of social work. I have gained some insight into mental health while working as a volunteer in The Mental Health Association of Hong Kong and The Hong Kong Down Syndrome Association. During my voluntary work, I encountered countless of people, who avoided or showed disrespect to children and adults with mental problems. I will never forget that day, when I was playing soccer with the children from the Down Syndrome, a crowd of young boys sneered at them and humiliated them loudly. Such a stigma indicated that mental health discrimination is still significant and persistent in our society, despite of its rapid development. It is an incontestable truth that all people have inherent worth and dignity, and each individual in our society is unique and valuable. With the aid of professional assistance and training, empowering people, who are vulnerable and in face of predicaments, to enhance their well-being is no longer something overwhelmingly difficult. I witnessed the improvement of the children with Down Syndrome, this made me strongly believe that each person has an inherent capacity and drive towards change, which can make life more fulfilling, mentally ill people are no exception. My step-brother was born with autism, but in some ways he is even more intelligent than myself. He has made me a better person and made me want to help others with disabilities in any way I can. In my lifetime I hope that we can eradicate the negative perception that is so commonly associated with mental disabilities. When dealing with an individual that is suffering from a behavioral or mental illness can be challenging, due to the fragile balance within their life. Not only do these members have to deal with the day to day changes of life, they must also deal with the reproductions caused by this instability. Moreover, the stigmas associated in these various contexts can lead to a plethora of problems. As social workers, it is our job to help navigate around these problems and help create success for the lives of our clients.
I first became interested in social work when I took a human rights course as a part of my political science major requirements. I have known that I wanted to go into the field of Social Work since my first year of undergraduate studies at SUNY at Fredonia. I entered SUNY at Fredonia as a major in secondary education, with a concentration in English. It was during my first semester of my freshman year that I had taken an introductory course in psychology. I realized then that I wanted to work with people, but not in the capacity as a secondary education teacher, but in a career in mental health. My professor spoke with such enthusiasm about the subject of psychology and psychopathology and soon, I found myself intrigued with these subjects. I wanted to help individuals who needed the help, especially knowing the stigma mentally illness exists in society.

As a student who began her college career without specific objectives, I never thought I would be writing a personal statement for an application to receive a Master’s Degree in the social work profession. However, I feel now that there is no other future for me than that of offering my education and personal commitment to vulnerable individuals in order to stabilize their lives.
