I belong to a middle-class family from a small town, named Rishikesh in Northern India. The quality of public primary health care services was severely deficient in those times. My elder brother is born with a birth defect ‘Club-foot’. My parents used to travel more than 150 miles every three weeks for his treatment. He went through multiple surgeries and heavy medications which made him weak internally. A weak immune system as a child meant that he was sick often and it hampered his education and career progress. We went through hardships fighting with it throughout our growing years. I was drawn to the medical field because of my early exposure to health implications faced by family members.

Their wellness is often taken for granted because of affordability and quality of healthcare services. The desperate state of public health infrastructure in India has convinced me that to make a difference to the larger community I need to be a part of ‘high level’ solution. A Larger number of communities can be focused at a time, and in turn, it can make a difference in a community health status.

My motivation comes from eagerness to deliver a better health to the community. While I remain committed to the promise of homeopathy, I have come to realize that I am far more intrigued by the concept of preventive medicine and its implementation with strategic analysis, technical assistance, and evaluation.

I moved to Berkeley with my husband for his job, this provides me the unique opportunity to study and broaden my perspective on public health. I thought of MCH to be the one I could relate to because of my course of study and continuing involvement in medicine and volunteer service.

I am aware that the Berkeley School of Public Health and this particular program are highly prestigious and also that the faculty members are renowned for their contribution to research in the area of public health. My international medical experience and dedication make me a good candidate and I hope that I get the opportunity to learn more and give back to the
