Who? Greetings, I’m Josh Matla, teacher at Atlantic Ocean High School. I currently teach Marine Science for 22 of the brightest and best 11th graders our school has to offer. I’ve been teaching at the school for 2 years following the completion of my master’s degree in education from Florida State University. I love teaching and my favorite part is actually making an impact on a student’s life by helping them grow, learn, and develop as a person in and outside of the classroom. I feel I can do this while also making learning fun, preparing students for the future, and improving their retention rate.

I became a teacher to make an impact on people’s lives. There’s no doubt I can do this without technology in the classroom. However, with technology in the classroom I can make a bigger and more meaningful impact on students lives by making learning fun, preparing students for the future, and improving their retention rate. Making learning fun for students is critical because students are more likely to and willing to learn the material. Technology in the classroom, like ipads, can make information that seems challenging or boring interesting with virtual lessons, videos, or games on a table. Using technology in the classroom will also prepare students for the future. CompTIA’s study showed that 9 out of 10 students indicated that using technology in the classroom would help prepare them for the digital future. These 21st-century skills are essential in order to be successful in this day and age. Education isn’t just about memorizing facts and vocabulary words, it’s about solving complex problems and being to collaborate with others in the workforce. According to studies, educational technology also improves students retention rates.
