Against the backdrop of concerted efforts by the United Nations (UN) in drafting a master-plan aimed at the improvement of healthcare delivery in developing countries, member-nations began the institution of several health reforms. These efforts by the UN culminated in the launching of the millennium development goals (MDGs) in the year 2000. However, by the year 2005, Nigeria’s health system was still performing far below average even by sub-Saharan standards and was ranked the 187th out of the 191 member states of the United Nations. A failing healthcare system as evidenced by this low ranking made it imperative for the Nigerian government with help from other international bodies take several measures to tackle the dreaded consequences of such low standard. However as the nation focuses on preventable diseases, some other diseases that are silently increasing the mortality and morbidity of its citizenry receives little attention. For these and other sundry reasons that Nigerians heaved a huge sigh of relief following the successful haemopoietic stem cell transplant in two sickle cell patients in one of the tertiary hospital in the nation. Aspects of medicine like pre-natal diagnosis and the application of Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) to the curative form of therapy for various malignant and non-malignant haematological and non haematological disorders as well as transplantation immunology are the fantasy level in my country. Thus sickle cell disease, a disease affecting a third of the populace and other immuno/gene therapeutically curable diseases are among the major health problems in Nigeria and the provision of services to affected persons and search for better, near reaching and affordable modalities o... ... middle of paper ... ...I will work with a tertiary hospital with good laboratories and would also take up an assistant lecturing position in a University. Being a member of medical research and humanitarian society (MEDRHUS) of my Alma Mata and possibly a lecturer will avail the opportunity of mentoring medical undergraduates and lightening up their interest in research and channeling their energy to the nations need while continuing humanitarian services. This program cum my clinical exposure will help me to gain more knowledge that will contribute to the understanding of diseases and its possible cure which will help in restoring hope to despairing patients in my country and above all to reach out to the sick across the globe. I promise to be diligent in my duties and participate actively in all studies and to obey set-rules governing the institute if given the opportunity.
