Personal Statement : Being A Woman

This aspect of my identity still somewhat has a hold on me, when it comes to current interaction with others. Sometimes I will use being a women to my advantage, as well as get out of things I may not find appealing. Such as, crying, or even just not wanting to do the dirty, heavy work. I would us “I’m a girl”, “Girls can’t get dirty”, Girls can’t lift heavy things”, so I shouldn’t have too. In the work place every9one considered me a bitch, or I must be PMSing because I’m being bossy, or even quiet. I also had several male employees that worked below me, take issue with the fact they had to take direction from me. Because I’m a women, they shouldn’t have to. Friendships with the opposite sex has been a challenge as well. Men often times would think when I befriended them, it was because I was sexually attracted to them. So at a certain point I became apprehensive with friendships of the opposite sex.
Gender bias for women is dissonant with dominant American culture, which is men. The structures of society’s power oppress, marginalize and alienate us. An explained notion for this can only be viewed at a micro level. On a macro level we are not able to account for the differential treatment. Because the characteristics of our country are the same for all women (K. Stam P. 594). There’s a huge divide in the work place between men and women. Many work places still follow traditional gender roles. Often times women experience a glass ceiling, which created a barrier for advancement. I have experienced this at a previous job. As well, I have experienced being promoted because I was a women. The work place needed to fulfill their ratios, so I was offered a higher position over someone that actually deserved it, a male. . ...he government has implemented polices as to how many children you’re permitted. As well, Muslims follow strict rules as to who you can date, and how you can dress. So there are many positive, and negative experiences that impact being a female.
Although my personal experience as a female may differ from many others, my private sense of being a female has coincided with societal gender norms. Often times it may seem our roles are lacking clarity, my personal conception of being a female has been a healthy one. Although my biological sex was determined for me, I do somewhat have a say when it comes to my gender. Being a female has its pros and cons, and we are often times held to different standards than men, I’m happy with who I’m. I feel blessed I’m a female. We’re smarter, live longer, and able to carry another human in our body for 40 weeks. I love being a female!
