Personal Statement Growing up in rural Texas, you have to learn to care for the things that are important to you. There really is not much to entertain yourself with so many adolescents become vulnerable to trouble. Luckily for me, I grew up with the responsibilities that came with growing up on a farm. I had things to care for on a daily basis and for the longest time, the things I cared for most were animals. I exhibited livestock in my youth and this is where I spent the majority of my time. I would come home from football or basketball practice and go straight up to the barn to tend to my animals. Along with feeding and cleaning, I would often administer vaccinations and antibiotics when needed. Because of my interest in medicine and science coupled with my love for animals some could say that I was destined to become veterinarian. The major I chose, animal science, even supported that notion. However, it was not until the summer after my freshman year of undergraduate where I realized it was human medicine that my heart was yearning for. I began work that May at a prominent performance equine hospital, observing the veterinarians that practiced there. …show more content…
Doctors should possess the skills necessary to assess what the patient actually needs contrary to what he/she believes they require. An illness obviously impacts one’s life regardless of how minuscule. A doctor plays a vital role in both the physical condition and the, often over-looked, emotional well-being of his/her patients. I firmly believe that through my experiences in two separate, but fairly similar branches of medicine I have developed the ability to care for those in a compassionate yet professional manner along with the ability comprehend the information necessary that being a health care provider
In the medical field, there are many ethical dilemmas that a person could face. One of the major dilemmas in the medical field comes from being a doctor. While attending to a patient/ client the doctor may not know the best treatment or course of action to take because of the many options there could be. The values and beliefs of a doctor can’t interfere with the treatment of a patient/client. Their job is to be honest, benevolent, respectful, and to maintain confidentiality of the patient/client.
In the medical community there appears to be a divide between disease-centered care and patient-centered care. Both Charon and Garden, readily acknowledge this. Charon explains how although doctors can boast in their “impressive technical progress,” and “their ability to eradicate once fatal infections,” doctors often lack the abilities to recognize the pain of their patients and to extend empathy (3). Charon further adds that “medicine practiced without a genuine and obligating awareness of what patients go through [empathy] may fulfill its technical goals, but it is an empty medicine, or, at best, half a medicine” (5). Often, doctors fail to remember that their patients are more than just a person with cancer or a congenital heart defect — they are human, a whole person with dreams, aspirations, and fears. According to Charon, “scientifically competent medicine alone cannot help a patient grapple w...
My interest in and understanding of the field of veterinary science has only been heightened with the time I have spent on various valuable work experience placements over recent years, especially during the four weeks in small and mixed animal practices in England, Wales, and Ireland. Spending time in these four very different practices allowed me to observe a wide range of routine and emergency
The responsibilities of a medical assistant includes a variety of different duties like communicating with the patients while verifying information such as insurance changes, taking note of the actual purpose of the visit, as well as preparing patients for examination. Before a physician visits with you a medical assistant will start performing preliminary test, checking your blood pressure, weight, temperature, and collect blood samples if needed. A person might choose to take the route of a medical assistant versus a LPN, PA, or a RN for a variety of different reasons. I am choosing this path more so as a stepping stool, I want to gain experience while being able to come into direct contact with patients before moving forward as a LPN. Others
Just recently I have been accepted to Texas A&M University I have also decided my degree choice will be biomedical science. With a biomedical science degree I have over fifty career choices I can go into. Also, this is my backup plan if I am not accepted into vet. School right away. The choices of careers range form agricultural economist, animal breeder, dentist, game manager, veterinarian assistant, and even zoologist. I have decided that what ever my career will be, it will be in agriculture and will deal with animals. Animals are so interesting and tricky they can’t tell you what is wrong with them like people can. With animals you have to find out for yourself.
I can 't recall when I realized both my parents were veterinarians. Their work was simply a part of my life and brought me exciting and wondrous moments such as holding a newborn puppy after a tough delivery or seeing the outcome of a difficult surgery. I grew up on a ranch with many animals, large and small. Numerous other animals were brought home for either treatment or to be fostered while finding a home. My first real job was working summers at my parent’s animal hospital. I always assumed having and caring for animals was normal. In retrospect, I was incredibly lucky to have had such unique opportunities to experience veterinary medicine first hand under my parents guidance.
As a doctor it is important to alleviate patient’s suffering with not just medicine but also with care. When a physician shows empathy and understanding about the patient’s condition, the patient is more willing to trust the physician. In addition, the patient will feel more comfortable about sharing their symptoms and concerns. This allows the doctor to build healthy physician-patient relationship based on communication and trust. As a medical student I will use care and compassion to understand my patients as respectful individuals rather than vessels of illnesses. I will try to provide both sympathy and empathy when speaking to patients about treatment plans and explaining their questions and concerns in a manner which is comprehensible but no
When I look back at my life to reach for the moments that define me, I see the look of pride on my mother’s face when I inform her of a new achievement, I smell the freshly cut grass before a major football game, and I hear the sound of my name being read off my pharmacy name tag. But it was not until I read the lines of perplexity and distress on an Alzheimer’s patient’s brow as he grasped for the name of his year-old grandchild, that I was shook with the realization that I had been taking even the smallest of my memories and experiences for granted. That humbling term at my local memory care facility became yet another defining experience for me. It powered my passion for medicine and neurology, as well as my commitment to dedicating my life
I have always wondered what my future career would be.I experienced many things during my days in school and at home.My experiences helped me realize that I should become an animal caretaker.Becoming an animal caretaker would mean that I could spend my time working and interacting with animals.I would need to be able to care for living creatures, have the right education, and withstand the disadvantages.
Veterinarians all over the world save lives everyday, I want to be part of that. Why would I want to be in this career? First off I love animals, I alway have and always will. Becoming a veterinarian will give you many things to look forward too every day. The job is adventurous and exciting, you never know what to expect. When I get through college I want to own my own clinic, but only after a few years of internships and local clinic jobs. A couple of weeks ago I was invited to Crockett’s vet clinic to work as a “assistant”. Wow! This opportunity was astonishing, it totally opened my eyes and assured me this was my dream job. In addition to everything I am not afraid to get dirty or bloody, this is one of the main things a vet has to deal with on a daily basis.
Choosing to become a veterinarian means that you have to put up with working in different environments. Going into further detail about the work environment, www. sites.tufts.edu states, “Not all veterinarians work in a traditional clinic setting. Veterinarians who treat horses and other livestock must travel between their offices and farms or ranches. They work outdoors in all kinds of weather and may have to perform surgery, often under unsanitary conditions. Those working in food safety and inspection also travel to farms, or even slaughterhouses and food-processing plants. Some veterinarians choose to conduct research, and work in a laboratory or office. These veterinarians spend little time working with animals. Veterinarians’ work can sometimes be emotionally stressful, as they deal with sick animals and anxious owners. The workplace can also become noisy due to sick or distressed animals. When working with animals that are frightened or in pain, veterinarians risk being bitten, kicked, or scratched”. Many individuals who choose to become a vet cannot handle the different physical and/or emotional challenges that come with the responsibilities of caring for sickened animals. Veterinarians have to prepare themselves to determine whether an animal gets to live or die in certain
“Hold my hand, Raja”, she used to tell me, calling me a king even though I was barely an adult. My grandmother or a-gee, as I called her in my mother tongue, always requested that I hold her hand when it was time for her daily insulin shots. She would always ask for me to give her the shots even though she knew how to take it herself and everyone at home were capable too. I felt awful when she winced in pain as I gave her the shot, day in and day out. I kept reminding her (and myself) that although it was a painful ordeal it was necessary to keep her healthy. As a child, I always wondered what was wrong with her, why she was having to take such painful shots, and most importantly what were in those shots that treated her diabetes. I believe that this was the beginning of my interest, which years later, would lead me to pursue Medicine as my career.

Attending medical school and becoming a doctor would fulfill a lifelong goal for me. Starting at a very young age, I have always been very interested in the sciences, particularly anatomy. As a child, all of my family members would poke fun at me for wanting to go with them to their doctor’s appointment just to look at the anatomical models or posters that might be there. My college education only furthered my fascination with how the human body works; everything from the molecular to systemic levels. I truly believe that my passion for learning new things about the human body will serve me very well once I become a doctor.
Vets have a good sense of problem solving, and this fits my personality. I know that if I pursue this career as a Veterinarian I will enjoy working everyday. I am good at solving problems and investigating what the source of the problem is, I can apply this knowledge to helping animal’s health. I’ve always liked playing with animals and taking care of them whenever they need help. This has always been an interest to me, and it brings me joy whenever I can help the animals in any way possible. Just last week my dog was shaking and his eyes were swollen. My mom came to me first for help, she knows that I am good with dogs. I covered his eyes and put warm blankets around him, and he was back to normal in thirty minutes.
