It was August of 1995. My family and I were traveling back to our home in Atlanta, Georgia from visiting our family in Canada. Only one state away, we were driving in the far right lane through the central part of Tennessee. The car jerked and flipped over again and again. There was a dip in the road that my mother did not see. After escaping the pile of metal that was once our vehicle, I realized my left ankle was oozing with blood. Once the ambulance arrived, I was taken to the nearby hospital. During the ride there, the paramedics kept me calm and even gave my brother and I a teddy bear to distract us from the severity of my injury. She explained every procedure she was performing and constantly asked if I was alright. After arriving in the hospital, the doctor took extra care in making my family and I feel comfortable. To him we were not just patients, we were people. Although the doctor and paramedic was much years older than I was, I aspire to do what they did to my future patients: Be able to connect with them regardless of age, race, and without going through what they are ex...
