Many people argue that the health of an individual is either a personal responsibility or a social responsibility. More than 60% of adults are not physically active on a regular basis and 25% lead sedentary lives (MINKLER). These high percentages of adults that are not physically active are not following the concept of personal responsibility in health. This can lead to many health issues that include but are not limited to obesity which can develop into other serious health issues. The definition of personal responsibility is an individual’s choices and actions with regard to diet, exercise, and so forth in helping to determine his or her health status (MINKLER). Not everyone is able to afford healthcare. By limiting health care to only people who have insurance, healthy individuals, and those that can afford to receive health care benefits affects a personal responsibility to one’s health. By being limited by some of the factors listed one may not seek care when needed and can result in bad consequences to one’s health. What can be done is administering a program to society that is unable to afford insurance that can help finance the health care costs. A program was created by President Barack Obama which is called the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. It expands healthcare coverage to 31 million uninsured Americans and provides better access to clinical prevention services by removing cost barriers (COTTRELL). An example of where this was put in place was the West Virginia’s Medicaid plan. There are two types of plans an enhanced benefits plan and a basic plan. The enhanced plan is for healthy individuals and allows more benefits while the basic does not. Both plans entail Medicaid members to sign documents of their member responsibilities and rights. By signing these documents they agree, among other things, to take their medications, keep their appointments, and avoid unnecessary emergency room visits. There are different diseases that can cause health problems with dieting and exercise that are beyond the person’s control. An example of this is a hereditary disease that may cause weight gain. Weight gain as well as many others may increase risks for developing other health issues in life. By having access to health care facilities can give the person the necessary treatment that may be needed to take control and help with hereditary diseases.
