Personal Reflection Of Directing In High School Shows

Directing is hard work, I’ve been stressing a short scene, so I can only imagine what a full blown show would be like. There are so many intricate details to consider that I had previously overlooked. All the pressure is on you as a director, your show is a direct reflection of your vison, communication, organization and dedication. If a show is good it had great actors, if it is terrible it had a terrible director.
This project was a difficult one, however, I am thankful for the learning experience. I will be directing high school shows, so directing is a skill I have to master. I am new to this, and there is so much I need to learn. Going into this project there were many things I had concerns about. We all had conflicting schedules and couldn’t meet when I would like or my actors wouldn’t respond to my emails. I am the type of person who wants a little more structure and like a sense of security. My actors were busy and have more of a “go with the flow” attitude. This made me work on my flexibility, which is a good skill to have. As much as I would like things to go according to plan, life just tends to happen. So I have to adjust, work on an alternative route and get reorganized. Once the ball was rolling things got easier. While my guys liked things their way, we worked out a compromise.
Dealing with people in a group that you don’t know and who work completely different than you is hard. However, we managed and honestly I wouldn’t trade Eli or Mason. We started working and getting to know each other and our styles. I am glad that I can honestly say that working in my group has been a pleasant learning experience, and I received a lot of positive things out of it.
